Our midfield is a huge problem for me.
If we are going to play 3 in central midfield then I think we need a solid tackler/ball winner (macherano type) which Lucas seems to do alright in, a box to box simple footballer (I think given time that Allen will be decent in this role) and a playmaker/scorer either in the Steven Gerrard mould or David Silva sort of mould.
A midfield three that I'd like to see get a run out would be Lucas, Shelvey and Suso although it's unlikely to happen. I don't think Gerrard should start every game anymore and would love to see someone like Erikson come in during January.

I take your point joe and i do remember that tournament and the report that showed worldwide liverpool are losing their fanbase. But the global market is different from the domestic and as you say is more transient. But i maintain in the UK, ireland and scandinavia (the domestic market) liverpool are far bigger than chelsea or man city fanbase wise. Of course in time even this will be erroded which brings us back as always to FSG.

yes al give u that one Stanley, we have maintained our support in scandanavia, don't know so much about Ireland tho where the support has always been a bit flakey due to united being the main club there. I don't know how much the support is in the U.K because back in the day people used to pick us to support because we were successful, so I would imagine the same criteria would be in effect for United or Chelsea now just like we had...

I'm not sure you can say that when we've come runner up twice and have had several 3rd place finishes.

depends what you mean about challenging, my opinion is based on actual belief that you have a team good enough to win it and are constantly playing football good enough. I don't think just because u finish second or third means you nessassary have challenged, you could have a situation where you are 20 odd points behind in February then have a good run with the team in front taking there foot of the pedal and just do enough to keep themselves ticking over, it could look close like we made it look a few years ago...

I see what you mean. When we came 2nd under RB, that was a definite title challenge. As odd as this may sound, there were times when we ended up 3rd or 4th that felt more like a challenge than 2nd under GH.

the only time we seriously challenged in my opinion was under rafa and even then it was all over in the new year.

March 97 we were 3 points off the top. That has to be classed as a genuine challenge.

I don't understand that then, surely being 3 points off top must be a genuine challenge for the league. I wasn't following football like I do now in '97 - Did you just feel we never looked like we were going to do it?
