i was checking out EPL stats tonight, Suarez is tied with Ba as the second highest scorer in the EPL. both have 7 goals with van persie in first with 8.
i think that's great for suarez, however, it kind of goes to show how little stats mean in this particular sport. since we are owned by a group who are known for their use of stats when considering who to buy, how much to pay, who's worth the money and all that...i realized how much i don't think that will work in this sport. my question is, does anyone know or does anyone believe they are implementing that tactic with us? and do you think it works/will work?
an example, the clint dempsey episode. FSG, for whatever reason, refused to give rodgers the few extra million needed to buy him. do you think that because of their moneyball thing that they decided that his stats did not warrant or make him worth the few extra million?

Stats ARE important, but there are too many variable to rely 'totally' on them.
Here's a few stats for you:
All of Brendan's purchases have been 23 or under. Nearly all of his sales have been over 23.
He may not have a director of football but it certainly looks like someone is defining the type of player he can buy. That rules out a lot of the so-called targets that people are talking about for January.

Stats are stupid, mindless little objects that bounce about in paper shops and have very little bearing on the reality of football. you could have 80% possession but if it dose'nt result in a win what dose that stat really tell you? you could have 50 strikes on target every game, but if a 5 year old could hit them better (as is the case with us) you could fool yoursely into thinking you don't need a striker! In football the best stats are your own eyes and brain and oh yes the results, the rest is just numbers.

Stoke have identified that it takes 20+ crosses or throws into the box to get a goal, so guess what? they pump the ball into the box to try and play on those odds or stats. admittedly no stat should drive a decision but they do have an important art to play, from player recovery time to scoring goals. read Geoff twentymens book(LFC Scout) and it's all about stats on a player, maybe not numerical but he identified if players has high levels of certain skills then LFC could do something with them.

Stats are important but should be meaningful. As a background in Maths you would know that you can prove whatever you want from stats by being selective and is a science in itself especially when doing it on football with so many variables. The complexity in football is that there is no one way of playing and different managers have different game plans which would influence the stats differently. It can be used but as part of a full array of other tools, IMHO

I've got a feeling if he stays injury free we could well have the EPL Top Scorer for this Season on our books for the first time in... Well Ever?
The boy is bang on form, Even when he has a bad game and we would want to throttle him he pulls it out the bag in the next game or so.
For him to be top scorer we would need him to get what? 25 goals or so?
Already on 7 from 10 games with 28 more to go.
I suppose the above all depends on if we get a #9 in January and push Suarez out wide.

If it continues this way, it would mean that our striker problem is sorted, but, we'll need a good back-up anyway. So it would also mean that our main problem this season is our defense system.
