I think 30 million is a significant sum to be spending. Not world beating, but we aren't a world beating club anymore. Kenny only got 10 million more investment, the rest was from sales. Admittedly that still means Kenny had a lot more to spend but I don't think Rodgers purchases should be free from scrutiny. Borini, 11 mill, completely unproven, we desperately needed someone to come in firing, ba has and had a 7 mill release clause, borini may one day be great, but it was the wrong singing at the time and we paid for it even prior to his injury. Allen, been playing well, good stats, could have lived without him and spent 15 mill on somewhere better.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want Rodgers gone or anything, but his transfer business thus far can deservedly come in for some stick.

A good manager can improve the club in a few weeks or a few months. Why does rodgers need 2 or 3 years to do what steve clarke has done in 2 months? Why are Fulham above us when they have lost their best players? Why are Swansea better than us even though we've got their manager and we already had better players? Why are west ham above us? why are we the 2nd best team on merseyside despite spending more on players in one year than moyes has probably spent in 10!?

That's all for now.

You actually believe that?? Sorry, but I can't agree with that statement. Granted he spent £15m on Allen and £10m on Borini, that aside, he's spent f*ck all.

£2.5m on Assaidi, and Nuri Sahin on loan. I'd hardly calling that "reshaping the squad". And spending under £30m on top of shipping out a lot of players isn't exactly being backed to the hilt financially. Especially when you considered the owners refused him the opportunity to sign Dempsey for as little as £6m.

He certainly has not been allowed to reshape the squad significantly in my book, and I think it'll be at least another couple of transfer windows before we'll be able to say that.

Including the sahin loan fee, rodgers has spent over £30m and has been allowed to ship out whoever he wants, with no restrictions. That to me, doesn't suggest that fsg have been unsupportive. When you add £30m worth of players to a team that finished 8th, you are entitled to expect definite and tangible improvements. In total, he has made about a dozen changes to the squad....you may not call that significant reshaping but i do.

I don't blame the club for not sanctioning the dempsey deal. He had already gone over budget so the fault surely lies in brendan's planning and management.

"Made a dozen changes"? - most of which were players going out of the club. How you expect selling/loaning players out is supposed to benefit/strengthen the squad in any way, shape or form is frankly beyond me. As far as the young lads who've taken the step up go, BR's hand has been forced to throw them in because the squad is so threadbare. He fully expected to land one or two players on deadline day, and we know he was denied one of the players he expected to land, due to the owners overruling him.

You're including loan fees now?! I hadn't even mentioned any loan fees received or transfer fees received for that matter for the players who've left the club.

Until at least 6 or 7 of the starting 11 first choice are Brendan Rodgers signings, I don't think it'd be accurate to say this is his team. As faz has said, the "backing" he's received compared to what Kenny got, well.... there's no comparison. I fully understand it's a case of 'once bitten, twice shy' for FSG, but even still, Kenny was never the choice they wanted. Rodgers IS their man, and I would have thought/expected they'd back him a bit more than they have done so far.

Brendan went over budget before a supposed Dempsey deal, did he? How do you know this? What was his budget?

The bbc, amongst several others, reported on transfer deadline day that the dempsey deal fell through when brendan found out at the 11th hour that his £20m net budget had been used up. I thought this was common knowledge??

But I think he will and I was impressed with his reaction to Joe Cole on Wednesday hauling him off and saying he has blown it. Make no mistake other players will have noted that. This is a man who knows what he wants and I feel will get it in the end. The only issue is FSG for me and will they back Rodgers.

I think you've put your finger on the elephant in the clubhouse there Stanley, people keep banging on about Rodgers, but FSG are the real culprits here. They signed a new manager and charged him with getting the wage bill down by shipping out a large wedge of the first team squad and then gave him peanuts to replace them. The money they gave him barely equals what they saved and in anycase wouldn't buy one top player let alone the half dozen we required. Yet everyone harps on about Rodgers, seems like the lazy and easy options to me. Apart from the their penny pinching on squad funding, our wonderful owners are now apparently proposing to penny pinch on the stadium issue, and there's barely a squak out of anyone about it. I suppose we'll have to be on the verge of administration again before people cop on to what is going on here.

Which of our best players did we lose, probably only Bellamy who wanted to return to his home town and he could not play regularly because of his knee. Both Kuyt (who was no longer starting games) and Maxi were replaced by arguably better players, Borini and Sterling. Stevie G has been starting most of the games (he was out for about half of last season) and Leiva is a couple of weeks away (last year he was out injured for the better part of the year). So I don't agree that our squad is weaker than last year. Maybe not much better, but definitely not worse.

I didn't say we lost any of our best players Vish, I said 'a large wedge of our first team squad' and I didn't say our squad is weaker than last year either Vish. What I said was BR was 'given peanuts to replace them'. If you read the post I was focusing on the need for people to start highlighting the futile penny pinching approach to squad building by our current owners. I'm sure you don't regard our squad rebuild as complete yet, do you? Also I doubt if you think the funding made available was adequate either, do you? I also think adding 15,000 additional seats to Anfield when we need 30,000 to match our competitors is an adequate response to our comparative revenue shortfall either Vish, do you? Those were the essential points I was trying to make.

I agree with you with regards to FSG not investing enough either because they don't have the money or they feel the investment is not sound. They have bet on FFP for sure, else, their business plan will just not work according to me. I also note that you agree with me that our squad is not worse than last season, that was my point. So total agreement there once the confusion is cleared.

It appears to me BR has a plan and that he will forgo a higher league position this season for the longer term vision and progress at the club.

He seems to have little interest in changing the play to suit the squad now. Rather his approach is everyone gets to grips with what he expects and he will find the players over a couple of windows or so to play competently within that style of play.

It of course remains to be seen whether he can find the quality necessary within the budget constraints he will work with.

The rights or wrongs are there for debate but that is how I see it.

I agree with your views. I am worried that with the budget we have, it might take long to get the right players + if we have good players developing into Xavi, Iniesta type of players, would they stay? Then, what happens in the mean time, if we are a mid-table team because our current players don't fit the system, will we be able to attrack the players we need. It is a vicious circle.

Yes, FSG screwed up but I think they will have got the message and we'll see some more players come in.

Yeah I'm aware of that, but unfortunately there were many more pieces of the jigsaw that are needed, and that wasn't the most pressing one. Also there are players who can do that job, maybe not as well as Allen, he is a really good player. But there were bigger holes in the imediate term, and the big picture, that needed to be filled.
