Two questions:

Was he worth it?

Given Rafa was available for free, is he £5m a better manager than Benitez?
would you rather we went and got our 2nd,3rd or 4th choice manager coz our 1st choice was too expensive? i rather pay the 5m and get their main man. lets face it 5m in football is northing unless you wana buy dempsey wink

grin

Hmm it's a good question lad. I think at the moment it's a massive gamble that isn't paying off. Brendan seems to keep spouting utter gob s***e and is getting himself into a right pickle at the moment. Rafa was great, but what was wrong with Kenny? He was doing well.

Ehrm - no he wasn't - 2 home games won Jan - May 2012 isn't exactly what you would call doing well!

Thats probably in the top 1 or 2% of managers honours of all time I'd imagine. His achievements in the past certainly made him a great manager. Maybe he has already peaked and isn't great anymore but he once was and his CV is hard to argue with

Let's face it, both Rafa and Dalglish came to us with some credentials, Rafa's CV being the most impressive. BR's credentials is relatively poor and definitely the owners took a gamble.

The gamble might pay off, we never know, though at least results wise, it is not looking good so far. However, though i am still skeptical about the appointment, i don't think it is fair to judge him now. We should I think judge him at the end of the season or if we are still close to the relegation zone come Jan (I don't think we should take any chances of getting relagated, that would be a disaster to say the least). A fair target to know if he has done well at the end of the season is an improvement over last season (anything better than 8th + a cup) for me.

I don't agree with your assessment of what a fair target is. I will judge this season's league performance on the 2nd half of the season when the players should be fairly used to the new system and we will hopefully have an extra option or 2 up front come January

Even if you judge him over the second half of the season, he should be able to improve over the whole season compared to the last, simply because, our last 2nd part of the season was abysmal (i think we ranked 17th pointswise in the league and Tom Warner said that it was the reason KD got the sack despite going to 2 cup finals and winning one).

Talking about getting used to a new manager/system, don't think that it should take that long, BR said it himself that it should take about 10 games + why doesn't Steeve Clark need half a season + KD (our worst manager) had I think the 3rd best points tally in the half season after he took over from RoyH.

But we might be saying the same thing if BR can get a similar or better 2nd half of the season. Would you take the risk of keeping him if we are below 17th in Jan? If we are above 17th and we have a good 2nd half of the season, we'll definitely be improving over the last season.
