But....

We are entitled to ask what if?

Stanley, I don't think Istanbul was the downfall of the club on the playing field. From that point on we were runners up in the CL final, made the semi final of the CL, won an FA cup, earned the most points in a single season (but not quite enough to win) and were regulars in the CL.

The failure to capitalize financially off the pitch was where we were let down. Had we been more sound off the pitch on the business side of things by signing larger sponsorship deals, increased worldwide marketing and moving forward with the new stadium, as just a few examples, based on our successes during that time, I believe the club would be in a much better position than where we currently are. The lack of activity to promote the club in its better years, based on those successes mentioned above was the failure of our progression in my opinion.

On the pitch our performances were getting better but when H&G took the club over they made our financial position even worse which is now affecting our on the pitch performances due to our inability to invest on to class players. Rafa had many top targets that he wanted to buy but wasn't backed by the owners so he had to o for 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices and unfortunately Kenny wasted a lot of money on player who weren't the calibre of players we needed.

Strange how we remember Istanbul for different things...

I think that was the most stressful game I have every seen (watched on telly) and I went from pure anger, screaming at three officials, most players and all family members, to abject relief, shock and disbelief at the result. We did the impossible...

I wouldn't have missed that roller-coaster of emotion for anything at all and I would love to learn how many new Reds joined the fold as a result of that Classic!

Fazackerly red, i dont ever refer to peoples' opinions as utter nonsense, it is arrogant and condescending. Particularly when your reply is incorrect. Evans was not the closest manager to the league, his best finish was 3rd. Benitez was the closest with a 2nd place finish. With all due respect get your own facts right before referring to my posts as sad and nonsensical.

I would say the Benitez team of 2009 is the best team to never win the league,i`d credit fergie for that.

Rafa is without a doubt the best thing to happen to LFC in years.
