The blame is indirectly caused by the 911 attacks. This lead to the war in Iraq that caused the global meltdown. This meant that borrowing money was impossible which meant that H&G couldn't cover the cost of the leveraged buyout. This meant that the investment in the team dried up and that success of Istanbul was generally missed. This meant that the squad was decimated to fund fresh faces. Quality deteriorated as did the depth of the squad. The owners started looking at administration, and was taken away from them. We are now left at the bottom of a hole that was created and the new owners have chosen to rebuild from the foundations rather than try to patch up the mess that already exists.

So there you have it.... The problem was the terrorist attacks.

whilst your argument is full of holes, such as lack of regulation on financial markets and good old fashioned greed. I am truly impressed. good post!

I am not bashing Benitez you have misunderstood the point I was making.
stanley I fully understand where you are coming from, my opinion is although it was the best thing to happen to us at the same time it was the worst thing to happen to us. I honestly dont think a Cup like that is worth winning unless you build on it or at least use it to improve yourself and we did neither, it's become a millstone around the Club's necks now with false expectation levels of grandeua. I think Benitez did well for us winning it back in 2005 but he also lost us a Champions League final two years later in Athens so he evend himself out, in the end the man done far more bad and damage to the Club than his heroic win in Istanbul.

Few flaws there Scainer. Gillet and Hicks could not refine the loan not because RBS would not lend them the money but because the era of cheap no questions asked credit was over. Normal loan terms resumed and G&H did not have the collateral. Something even a basic due diligence would have shown up had Moores and Parry bothered to do one.

Yes and the should have flogged the club to the highest bidder at the time but they allowed their greed and petty squabling get the better of them.

Hardly a flaw to the ridiculous (if somewhat truthful) argument :-P

Just because winning a CL final made him a hero, it doesn't mean that losing a final made him a villain!!! He was a double hero for getting us there twice!!!

Scainer g&h did not have the collateral. That was why RBS would not loan them.

I think you missed my point. or am I missing something?
Aren't we saying the same thing?

How is stating the same thing a flaw in the argument?
Surely it supports it? crazy

does in my book, even though we probably did'nt deserve to win tne final in 2005 we definately should of won the 2007 one only for Benitez stubborness and stupidity, still cant believe he left Crouch and Bellamy out of the team
