I do think he's wasted playing defensive midfield. He's hardly a tough tackling midfielder and doesn't offer much protection to the back 4 in my opinion.

He will thrive when he can use that passing ability in the final third more but I think others are more suited to the defensive midfield role. In my opinion Gerrard should play defensive midfield until Lucas is back, he's done an excellent job playing like that for England.

Fair point that, although playing the defensive role can only improve his all round game, I would like to see him further forward but I dont think he will be scoring lots of goals when he his.

I think some of the posters commenting on this have misunderstood completely. Rogers is not having to defend a poor player, he has been asked to do a specific job for the manager and is doing it to the letter. Allen's ability when he is in shackles because of a judgement BR has made due to injuries and what he feels will be a higher probability of winning the games is what is relevant.

It is very difficult to judge whether he is the £15 million player many presumed he would be under these circumstances.

It's kind of like asking Robbie Fowler to play holding midfield and then criticize the fact he isn't getting into scoring positions or indeed scoring goals even though he could be doing an outstanding job in the role he is being asked to fill.

Shearer has voiced his concerns obviously not being aware of the instruction Allen is under.

What he knows about football apart from timing a run and putting the ball in the net is extremely negligible.

Joe allen is one of the few good buys in last 3 years.
Lucas ' injury means he is probably either playing out of position or he has had to adopt a deeper role with shelvey or gerard to compensate

Ha, ha Lawrenson does look like death warmed up these days right enough Toothy, and I've always thought Shearer to be a rather dull and brainless commentator on matters football. If I could add anything to your comments above it would be:

that wasn't shearer in the video , he signs with an 'x'

and carheex, for what its worth i pretty much disregard everything he says about SG or anybody else, he relies on cliches as he knows how to finish a sentence with a cliche, the one about SG happens to be true though I guess.

I think he is playing really well because he makes himself available and is willing to have the ball which he retains. Watching Gerrard and Henderson, they have a tendency to hide off the ball either to rest or waiting for the ball to come to them.

I think at times liverpool become too static and this is because either to other team is marking well or that the movement isn't available. Allen keeps the ball moving and does create space, unfortunately his impact is directly related to others, so if they're not available the impact is minimal.

Is he worth £15 million? No way, but he could become that.

I beg to differ.

Rogers is lying when he talks extensively about his plans and how he has Allen playing is he Carhee?

In the first one or two EPL games it was blatantly obvious we had a gaping hole down the middle and were conceding alarmingly. I certainly think that he has modified things because of that and whilst nowhere near right yet, certainly look better with Allen playing tight and how Rogers demands without having Lucas in the side.

In fact anything else would be damn right reckless.

Some good points and maybe I need to reassess my opinion on him. Sometimes I find it hard to judge a player purely on what he can do......i instantly ask myself what I expect from a £15m player and look around at what other clubs have paid £15m for. Generally, that depresses me though....
Allen does perform a decent enough job for us. He's not as bad as I have made out previously, but he's also not as good as some people are suggesting either. Putting his price tag aside (we KNOW he was overpriced but got stung thanks to the loosely worded agreement between BR & swansea) he's certainly better than a lot of central midfielders we've had in recent years.......henderson, spearing, adam, sissoko (post eye injury), cheyrou, le tallec, diao, biscan, poulsen etc ..

I'll just have to accept that the likes of gerrard, mascherano & hamann don't come along all that often.
