I agree with the point Emp is making. We did nothing off the field to capitalise on being champions of europe and winning it 5 times. What happened was a cack handed sale to gillet and hicks which is when we bought Torres not under Moores. In terms of off the field we are no further on but on the field have taken 4 steps backwards.

If you look at what the club has spent in the last 10, 15, 20 years in comparison to those around us (except for last year when kenny went nuts), you can see that we've gone backwards by standing still. You could easily argue that were it not for those few outstadning years under Benitez, we'd be even further behind as our name would be less signifcant in europe and we'd have spent less money. We might even be in the championship - before you laugh that off, our form over the last 12 months would have got us relegated had it been in one season and not spread over 2.

i don't think we have taken that many steps back, the win was an abnormal one which didn't represent where we were in footballing terms..its was luck,mixed with defensive tactics which frustrated better teams and throw in a few world class players that played out of their skins for us. if Br had of taken over then we would never have won the thing but probably be in a much healthier position now. rafa won the thing,but couldn't help with the chopping and changing, the defensive players ,the rotations...he need to do a pep or a BR on us but couldn't as he is a isolated manager who believes in himself over any footballing philosophy.

i think istanbul put us on the cusp of development. the club failed to capitalise (all starting with the gerrard contract fiasco) and then failing to invest properly. the manager failed by trying to be a tactical smart arse and believing his own hype. he developed a god complex.
istanbul wasnt to blame, but it was certainly the fork in the road.

If BR had taken over then, you say we would not have won the Champions league but probably be in a healthier position than now. What is this based on? What has BR done in that period? How many trophies did he win? Ok, he had a weak Swansea team promoted and got to 11th? For me RoyH did better with Fulham. It's your opinion, I fully appreciate and we'll never know if you are right or not, but I beg to differ.
