no that was the last legacy of bill shanks which meant truly world class players like gerrard and carra were at the club, and combined with rafa's tactical knowledge a mircale of epic porporations was some how realised. . if only rafa built on that, alas his personality and approach to football got in the way Gerrard and Carra are two local lads who would have ended up at either Liverpool or Everton naturally anyhow without taking anything away from Shanks legacy. Rafa did build on that and brought us to another final 2 years later and our best title challenge since we last won it. He also made us extremely aware of the way the club was being run and has always had Liverpool as a football club in his heart and not as a business.

So you don't think Rafa left us with an excellent academy which is starting to bear fruit now?
Am I calling for Rafa to come back? No. I am saying the man deserves the credit for the good things he did at this club.
Now get off your high horse and read an entire thread and understand the context before jumping in next time

And I'd argue that we were already a club in relative decline until Rafa came along and gave us consistent Champions League football.

and hows that for sure exactly? considering he put in place the coaching staff etc for the revised academy he might have been waiting patiently for his own batch of youth players to come through, ie Sterling and Shelvey Rafa put in place systems which will take years to fully shake off. Yes he made some good decisions early in his career but he eventually played ugly football with a short lifespan, made illogical team decisions, alienated players such as Gerard and spent ludicrious amounts of money on sub-standard players. Most of the top players wanted to leave because of his behaviour. He started our decline and is the reason it's been so detrimental. To even mention Rafa is a clear sign that you lack understanding of football! Every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market. A record of 50/50 would be considered an average return Rafa bought in from memory Alonso, garcia, Kuyt, Reina, Skrtel, Agger, johnson, Mascherano, Sissoko, Torres, Riera, Sterling, Shelvey and that is often without getting his first choice buy such as David Silva He also bought Aqualani, Dossena, Keane, voronin (free). Those 4 stand out as the main mistakes he made and he never wanted Keane for one. His major mistake was the alienation of Alonso which everyone knows and regrets. What do you mean he alienated Gerrard? By playing him on the right wing or behind Torres where he knew he would be more effective because of his occasional lack of positional discipline? The top players who left were Alonso which is well documented, Masherano who had his head turned by Barca (who wouldn't?) and who else of major importance did he chase away?

Josemi, Nunez, Gonzalez, Barragan, Antwi, Hobbs, Anderson, Kromkamp, Paletta, Pennant, El Zhar, Duran, Voronin, Itandje, Plessis, Leto, Flora, Degen, Dossena, Cavalieri, Aquilani, Mavinga....
I don't blame Rafa for Alonso. I blame TH & GG, for providing no money to the team. This is why I defend FSG as they have so far continued to support the team.

How many of those players cost above 3mil?
Pennant, dossena and Aquilani. Any more? Most of those players were all bought as youth prospects
