He was arguably the best player for England in the Euros but his role was different in a different system which was playing defensive, counter attack and long tomahawk passes. This type of game IMHO suits him as he cannot be the box to box mid-fielder all the time anymore.
He looked lost in the BR system last Saturday, we were pressing from the front in a packed WBA half, he could not make his traditionnal runs from the back (even if he cannot do too much of this in a game he is still good at it) and could not do long passes as he was positioned up in front behind the forwards.
I still think he is one of our most skillful players and it's up to Rodgers to see how to use him best, else, he should sell him (which I would not like I should admit). Talking about commitment, I do not believe that SG is not committed to the cause, can be tired sometimes because of age.
AVB had a similar problem with Lampard, he could not use his strength as he wanted a revolution in terms of style. He left, the new manager played the players to their strength and they won the Champions League and FA cup, a complete turnaround. With more money he bought new players and trying an evolution. I personally prefer evolutions.

Coates or Carragher tomorrow, managers big decision. I would not play Carra definitely and if Coates is not ready (doen't have the manager's confidence) would rather play Kelly in the middle with Skrtel and Johnson on the right. I think this is where Kelly used to play in the youth teams.

Coates needs to start, he is ready, we are basically destroying this player by not playing him in games. Carragher needs to retire.

I'd rather Assaidi start than Downing. He may be an unknown player to us but that also means City wont know what to expect, if he has a gd game he could catch them by surprise. if he's not performing then he can always be taken off.
He should be on the bench atleast, and maybe thrown on in the 60th-ish minute if he doesnt start, let him run at tired legs.

A draw wouldn't be a terrible result, but we need to be aiming to win this one. One thing for certain is we can't afford to lose it. The panic stations with some fans would go into overdrive. Take heart lads we withstood their great might last season, and we can do it again tomorrow, so let them come and we, in the words of Macbeth will; "Hang out our banners on the outward walls; The cry is still 'They come'. Our castle's strength Will laugh a siege to scorn" Aye lads let that be our battle cry; " Our castle's strength will laugh a siege to scorn" I'm predicting 2 - 1 in a classic.

Having watched our defensive display in the last 4 games, I am not confident to win tomorrow. Just hope we don't get a spanking

Suarez is without doubt our best player. He may miss chances but he is far from awful and if you think he is you may as well support netball. It's about what he can create and that bit of magic he can produce. So he didn't do it in the first game of the season but I bet you if he wasn't on the field, those chances he missed wouldn't have even been created. Maybe instructed/educated that to shoot is not always the only option. If you take the six he reportedly missed last week, if he would have looked for a player that was better positioned in 2/6 he'd be far better overnight. He is good, but no use if it is to the detriment of the team and the ethos Roger's has made clear he wants is quite evidently every cog as one or a bunch of losing individuals more often than not.

I have a feeling we might just put in a good performance tomorrow it all depends on who plays well for us, i'd start Kelly CB for Agger because Carra just doesn't have the pace and he loves to drive the ball 60 yards out of defence which i hate. I'd give Assaidi atleast 30 mins to come on at the end, if i had my choice i'd probably start him for Downing who really doesn't add much except predictable runs and he wont even take on the wing back or give it up the line to one of our own running wing back, all he does is slows down our attacks.

Hopefully you are right, in fact, last season we drew (Hart was their man of the match else we would have won) and beat them in the L.Cup semi final, both games at home. We'll see if we will be improving on that without loosing any major players (except perhaps Bellamy who had a good game in the Cup game) but adding 26m of quality. I should be much more confident
