Wow!!?

Out of interest, do you predict we'll finish near the top at the start of every season, regardless? Or do you genuinely think we've improved enough to over take spurs, newcastle, everton AND arsenal, AND have done enough to overcome the champions league winners spending spree? 8th to 3rd is virtually unheard of!

Chelsea's spending spree means nothing, they flushed £50mill on Torres, didn't win them the league though did it? Chelsea were still [oops] poor in the league when Di Matteo was there. In the cup competitions they just parked the bus and got extremely lucky that the other side couldn't finish. League games are just a bit different, as seen from there end of season games in the league. Where Champions League still wasn't definite, and they managed to win the Champions League, qualifying them for the next season, over the team that over the season deserved it in Spurs.

My prediction for Liverpool is based on the football Rodgers wants to play, if all goes to plan and the players jump on board, the football HAS to be successful, because you keep the ball and control games.

I don't think Arsenal are as good as people are making out, neither are their signings.

Spurs, the jury is out.

Newcastle were a one of last season. Just you wait and see.

We spent £35m on Carroll and it took us backwards! At least Torres scored more, set up more and also won the fa cup and champions league. Carroll or Torres - who will make the biggest impact this season? I can't see how we will finish above Chelsea, not this year. As for Arsenal...they always get written off but always finish 3rd or 4th. Underestimate them at your peril.

We've got a new manager, new players, and new way of playing - it will take a lot of time. Our rivals for 4th don't have anywhere near the upheaval to contend with.

It will be the usual top 4, it will be hard to break into, but will wait and see who comes in before the end of the season. If we keep Agger, bring in Sahin and another goalscorer and a winger and we will have a chance. Team is strong now if Sahin comes in, we just need to find the net.

Hopefully Borini will produce the goods, cus Carroll won't

My word Craney when u talk serious you know how to hit the nail right on the head, agree completely about Newcastle. If we can bring in Sahin and maybe a winger/forward i think we have the ammo to compete with Arsenal for 4th. I think if Spurs lose Modric and we bring in 1 or 2 we will be better than them and i honestly think this season if we go about it properly and the players give it their all every week 4th place should slide right in to place, that said it is Brendan's first season so if we dont get it we shouldn't be too disappointed.

Great post Craney.

I think City, United and Chelsea are nailed on for 3 of the Top 4 places.

Not sure if we will get to 3rd or even the Top 4 but I think we are in better shape than Spurs, definitely and possibly Arsenal also.

I suspect some of Newcatle's players will suffer "2nd season" syndrome and Everton will tread water as they always do.

A good start would do us an absolute world of good and things could snowball from there.

I honestly have no idea this season, absolutely none.

So many quality teams in the mix, teams with new managers (Spurs) Chelsea with what looks like 5 or 6 new faces in their starting line up could go either way, City not having added anyone of note could get stale (have a feeling Mancini might lose the plot a little if things don't go his way too)

Arsenal will always be there or there abouts, and who knows, Fergi might change his formation for the worst to accommodate RVP... will Newcastle step up or have been found out???

And then there's us... confused

We could have an early effect in the first few weeks of the season with lots of really big games at home. If we got 12 points from the first 6 games I would have us top 4 and so would a lot of people. Our problem is always against the more unfashionable teams when we rarely play well. And we start against one of them who beat us last season. All ifs, buts and maybes as usual.

Like a lot of people I think the top 2 will be the same and their two horse race may start even earlier this season. United have improved their squad and City will have Tevez back all season.

For us a full season out of Gerrard/Agger/Lucas/Suarez will be enough for a top 4 finish. Add the pen misses from last season converted to goals and half the woodwork ones going in and 3rd can be achieved.

I think the Terry thing will drag on and affect Chelsea as much as losing Drogba. Arsenal will struggle without RVP's goals and their signings may struggle with the pace of the game here. Newcastle will not follow up last season's performance. They were as surprisingly good as we were surprisingly poor. Everton having lost a couple of players will rely on an ageing team. If they finish within 12 points of us then we will have had a bad season. Spurs losing Modric and being short of strikers will find them out very quickly.

City and United aside it all boils down to which team has adapted best to the changes in manager and personnel available. Surprise teams for me QPR to do well and Villa to do poorly.
