Brendan Rodgers says he will not break the bank to make Liverpool competitive at the top of the Premier League again.

It is less than two years since Liverpool almost entered administration as the era of Tom Hicks and George Gillett came to an end, and Rodgers is determined that the club will not find itself in that same position again.

Rangers are the most high-profile club to suffer financial meltdown, demoted to the Scottish Third Division, while Portsmouth's future is not yet assured after overspending in the Premier League.

"This is Liverpool Football Club and it's incredible to think it came close to bankruptcy," Rodgers said. "You may think it'll never happen to your club but who'd have thought it could to a team like Rangers?

"But if football continues to pay the wages some clubs do, you will be asking for it. If you believe it can't happen, well it can, maybe not now but certainly later. Look at Rangers' history. That is a warning for everyone.

"In professional and social life, I like to get value, that's just my nature and my upbringing. I won't pay anything at all costs. If there is a player who can make a difference, we'll do all we can to get him. What I'm not prepared to do is waste time, money and effort for anyone who won't add value. I prefer the hungry player, one who wants to succeed.

"They will earn good money - and they will get their value and worth if they perform."

Rodgers also insisted the club does not have to look to the big clubs for new signings.

"There's sometimes a snobbery towards players at a lesser club, an ignorance," he added. "If you look at our squad, there aren't too many who have dropped from heaven. A lot have come through lower clubs, made their way and are now making their name at Liverpool.

"The club's history is about hungry players, coming from the lower leagues and working their way up. Talent aligned with hard work takes you a long way. I find it difficult to work with players who don't share and match that."

That's all well and good but inevitably we will miss out on targets which could take us to the next level, just for the sake of saving small amounts of money. And I don't see how paying £15m for Joe Allen fits in with any of the above either. We were the only team in for him and had to pay well over the odds because of the agreement about not going back for his ex-players.

If he said that we're going to pay what ever it takes to bring players in to the club you'd moan about it?! This is a long term plan all about bringing the correct players in for long term gain not short term fixes.

Too early to say mate. let his football do the talking and at the end of the season maybe we can see how he has added value to the team, if any.

BR said himself that he would have paid millions more Joe allen. He knows JA better than any of us and so i trust BR over any of us in judging the value JA's value to our team. all it matters is for JA to deliver.

Well, he's unlikely to announce at the press conference that he only really wanted to pay £9m is he?
He's bound to try and make it seem like he got us a bargain, to appease the fans and boost the player's confidence.

Like you say though, it's too early to judge. From what I've seen of him and heard about him I'm sure he isn't worth £15m+......BUT.....his signing does reduce the amount of games that Henderson plays so maybe there is value in the fee after all.

My God this forum does my head in with its negativity upon times.

Moan that we don't sign players. Moan when we do.

Why people continue to slag players off is beyond me. It wasnt long ago people were slating Lucas.

Suppose this is the price we pay for the modern day football fan.

If you cant support us when we lose then dont bother supporting us when we win.

Some of you would do well to remember that.

looks like we are bringing in good loan players for a year, not to sure of Tello as he is young, but Sahin is mean't to be excellent. If we get both brilliant.

This is clever I think, the big players do not want to come to us now, so instead of buying in players who will be surplus to requirements when we start getting better, bring in good loan players, get further up the table and then next summer better players will not turn us down as much

If I'm not mistaken, Tello has 1 year left on his contract so I can't see us getting him on loan for a year and then snapping him up for free. He'll need to be a straight purchase.
