Spot on redordead!
Also, people who can't actually fathom a decent debate will say YOU ONLY WANT BIG NAMES LIKE XAVI blah blah blah bullsh!t, but if we only go for players like borini and allen and then people like Suarez and Skrtel might think the club is showing a lack of ambition, I'm gonna jump ship. And Liverpool, well we are no longer a team that can say we can replace anyone. Cause we can't. We haven't replaced our better players for the last 5 years. We will slip further and further down the table if we don't arrest the decline by not letting our good players leave.
But like you say redordead, it is an overreaction to what skrtel said. He actually didn't say much. For all we know he just wants a better contract.
I wouldn't necessarily say that. It's true, we haven't been able to attract top-quality players for some time now, but we're certainly able to replace most players we've lost. It's just that a lot of our replacements haven't panned out. I'd say that Johnson has been a more-than-adequate replacement for Arbeloa, and Agger has been a good replacement for Hyypia/Carragher, but Adam and Henderson have been poor replacements for Xabi, and Carroll is a poor replacement for Torres. But then again, who would be able to replace Xabi and Torres? They were truly exceptional players and almost anyone would be a step down. We don't need to be bringing in £30 million World-Class players all the time to show "ambition." But we do need to start spending our money wisely. Newcastle has certainly shown a lot of ambition in the last year or two and Tiote, Cabaye, Cisse, Ben Arfa, and Ba combined all cost less than Carroll! Allen and Borini could turn out to be great players for the club, but we just don't know. One's not even at Liverpool yet and the other hasn't played a game!
