I've seen a lot of discussions about how Carroll may not fit into the new 4-3-3 tiki-taka formation so may be moved on, but I haven't seen much mention of another player I can see fitting into our new front line even less well - Downing.

If the front 3 are all supposed to interchange, with the fullbacks providing width and the attacking players in the 'wide' positions acting as inside forwards flanking the central striker rather than traditional wingers hugging the touchline, beating a defender and delivering a cross I can see Downing struggling as these are supposedly his best attributes (although we didn't see him at his best attempting to play this way on the left wing last season).

I think we still need options for different types of games so I could see a front line of smaller mobile forwards e.g. Bellamy, Borini, Suarez being BR's first choice (or with Suarez on the left and Dempsey on the right depending on transfers) and whilst I would be happy to have an alternate option of more traditional wide men providing crosses for a target man e.g. Downing, Carroll, Adam Johnson/Sterling this doesn't seem to be the new managers way of setting up a team.

About the only hope I do see for Downing under BR would be if he could become more effective playing on the right hand side cutting inside on his left foot but if an offer came in I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave (though maybe not this transfer window given the departures so far and questions over Bellamy's future).

i think for him to fit the system he'd have to play on the right. but he's pretty much useless wherever he plays. you don't usually realise he's playing until he commits a foul in the 44th minute.

id prefer us to take our losses on downing and bring in the players that will suit the system. i think the new style of play will suit raheem sterling down to the ground so i expect to see him play much more games. something to be excited about at least

BR has been quoted as saying he wants his wingers to be able to get to the bi-line and cross. Downing fits that bill.

Downing not being able to interchange positions? For Villa he played on the left, behind the striker, and on the right at various times and played them all well. I'd say he can fit into the plans.

I don't really think Downing is good enough, he's a very one dimensional player, he likes running on the wings and cutting in, but even that fails for him.

Thank christ - a thread that isn't about Carroll in some shape or fashion!!!!!!!

Having said that, I really wouldn't have a clue about Downing and how he'll fit in.

Let's start another Carroll thread!!!! laugh

Bottom line he's got to go anyway.

I'm all for giving players a chance and it's not often you should look to sell after one season. But 0 assists and 0 goals in 30+ league games? That's cut and dried for me, he's out.

I didn't see much of Aston Villa under Houllier beyond Match of the Day so I'm not sure how he performed as a central midfielder but from what I've seen about the likely new 4-3-3 system there isn't a 'second striker' or Attacking midfielder in the hole (although as this is the preferred position of several of our players BR might tweak the tactics to suit) so if he stays it will likely either be to play on the right or left of the attacking three depending on where Suarez plays and any new signings e.g. Dempsey/Johnson/Ramirez with the central midfielders likely to be
DM Anchor Man - Lucas, Spearing/Coady or hopefully a new signing
Left Central Midfielder - Aquilani, Adam, Cole? (not sure at this stage if BR will see him as one of the Inside Forwards or a central midfielder)
Right Central Midfielder - Gerrard, Henderson, Shelvey

So with Suarez, Bellamy, Downing, Cole? and Sterling for the wide positions, Carroll and Borini through the middle at least we should have a fair depth of squad if we can bring in a new DM and winger and don't have any further departures (although I do feel we could also benefit from a new left back/left wing back if Robinson isn't ready to step up - preferrably one who could also play further forward if required such as Bastos or Vargas)

The fact the SD got no assists last season says as much about our forwards as it does him.
