Arsenal and chelsea are no great shakes. We could have got 4th last season had we had a proper manager and not wasted all that transfer fees on dross. Not saying it would have been a definate but we had a chance but we underperformed on an immense scale.

I wouldn't put too much stress on where we finished last season, it was freakish how many times we hit the woodwork and our inability to score even sitters at times eventually undermined the teams morale, causing us to slump in the second half of the season. Had we even scored half of the clear cut chances we created, morale would have held up we would have been knocking on the door for a top 4 finish. It's most unlikely we will have a similar experience this season and I feel a top 4 or very close is a realistic target. no hard luck stories mate I'm with Annefield58 completely - last season WAS freakish. Chin up pal, why all the doom and gloom?!?!? sorry mate the league table doesnt lie and there are no hard luck stories .

Why would he damage his own credibility by deliberately saying something if it were obviously untrue? Of course our performance in front of goal last season was freakish and at times quite incredible. I can't see any possibility of a repeat of that this season so yes a much improved points tally particularly at home is very likely, including a significantly higher finish.

Why does suddenly everyone say BR said this so it must be FACT. Part of his job is to say the 'right' thing at the 'right' time. Is he going to say no Liverpool got exactly what they deserved? Do me a favour.
On the actual debate. There are certainly elements of bad luck. But in reality. hitting the post or bar is bad finishing, not bad luck. It's an off target shot.

Woodwork stats are not exact science, but I think the best way is to count all the shots from teams that touched the woodwork. Compare the total vs # of goals vs # of bounce out. Ideally compare such figures across multiple seasons.
Shots from close range that ended up hitting the woodwork and bounced out are surely down to more poor finishing than bad luck. On the other hand, if shot from a good distance, more luck is involved than simply poor finishing.
Rafarendum: follow your hypothesis, we'll end up with 15 and 13 more goals than Newcastle and Chelsea. I'm not so sure we'd still finish below them. Let's say every 3 extra goal will get your team another win, that could mean 5 more wins, and we were 13 pts behind Toons.

I think it also shows a lack of confidence, and hopefully that's something that will change this season.
