I have been thinking like most fans about last night but in recent months in general. Like how we can play man u off the park but then get beat by two teams at home in Europe that wouldn't make the quarter finals.
To me one fact that comes to mind is motivation, why did we do so well against everton and man u because of the rivalries and the players knew the passion of these games. They didn't need motivation because if they didn't in these games they shouldn't be playing in the red shirt.
However other games to be honest they haven't looked as motivated in the same way as previous seasons. If a goal goes in or they get under pressure, heads begin to drop. After last nights game they all looked drained and gutted at the end. Now i know Rafa is good with tactics and is a wise head but can he motivate. Because right now thats what we need the most we need someone to get the passion back the fire and determination into our play.
Yes Rafa can figure out a game plan but if the players have no confidence or lack the motivation to go out there and put the plan into action then its useless.

The managers main task is to motivate.
John Aldridge suffered the same problem at Tranmere.. Could beat any Prem team, but just couldnt play the bread and butter games.
As you pointed out, the big games are self motivational for the players, the week in week out games need a manager to lift the spirits of the players he is responsible for.
I think even the least insightful fans are now beginning to see that Benitez is a destructive force.

i think the motivation was the league this year and with the poor start we had, i think the team are proper shell shocked over it. `there is an absence of drive and focus at the moment. no common goal. but the ability is there. if agger and dosenna had've put their headers away it could have been a comfortable victory, but last nights game was a strange one, playing a match like that when youre already out doesnt fire the spirits, especially when heads are already down. they need to gather themselves now, and get it going. Put the CL behind them and fight for whats left.

sorry flamey but you need to get your head out of the sand - the team is playing like this every week, except when we face united or everton
there is a serious problem there and trying to pretend there isn't is silly

surely well paid professionals could be able to motivate themselves, i dont think motivation is the problem anyway confidence is but hopefully with torres and aqualini back they will lift or performance levels and spirits and i agree with flamey agges and dosenna could have scored last night and it would have been a comfortable victory

yeah maybe they should be its th same in every football team and one of the roles for the coaching staff is to get the team in the right spirits. This is not happening and yes hopefully having a full team will improve things but i have to be convinced. But if it doesn't that one less excuse Rafa has and more flack will be directed at him (not that he gets enough from some members already lol)

there is a serious problem there and trying to pretend there isn't is silly how is my head in the sand? i acknowledged and gave my reason as to why we have been playing like this all season. i didnt say "we just had no motivation for last night".

the ability is there i was referring to - what ability? kuyt has never had a decent touch, riera has never been a top class winger, skrtel has never been able to pass, mash has never been able to pass forward, lucas has improved but he is still not creative enough to play alongside mash, insua has no pace, johnson can't defend
we are not good enough - and the coaching the players are getting is not improving them like it should ...... we have serious problems .... unfortunately *sighs*

Rafa has never been a motivator. He's a tactician and I still believe one of the best. I would have thought Sammy would be the motivator.
