Phil Jones - Blackburn
Chris Smalling - Fulham
Michael Carrick - Spurs (before they were top 4 material)
Ashley Young - Aston Villa
Antonio Valencia - Wigan

It seems that signing players from mid-table sides didn't work out too badly for Manchester United? I think when they got Steve McClaren in as coach a few years ago it was from Derby?

Signing players/coaches from lower or mid-table sides doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna bring the team down to that level - the reason behind them signing is that they're ready for a step up after out-growing their own teams. We paid good money for those players, and as a result should be expecting them to step up and not rest on their laurels as mid-table players.

Remember the days when we signed mid table players and they became world beaters?

Good point Bar.

All 5 of those players have really kicked on at United.

Very few players start their careers with the top top clubs.

The vast majority work their way up and players develop at different speeds. (Lucas)

Great point Bar.

However, United didn't sell Rooney and then buy a player not even half as good.

United do not insist on playing all of the new signings week in week out. Fergie tends to blood them in slowly. We haven't seen that with Henderson.

I wouldn't say that the new players/coaches have brought us down to that level more that we are now playing at our level with the players we have.

I agree with the experienced players not pulling their weight. Gerrard in particular has been poor since his return (barring the Everton game). I would even hazard a guess and say that our win ratio was better with him out of the side rather than in it? I may be wrong.

Carra has unfortunately come to an end in my opinion. It is sad to see as he has given his all over the years but with Agger/Skrtel partnership blossoming, his days are numbered. I do however hope he takes u a coaching role perhaps at the academy.

maybe we have gotten rid of the wrong players. Gerrard,Carra,Reina,Kuyt,Sktrel,Johnson, Agger were all here under Rafa nearly 3 seasons ago and basically only Skrtel has improved. In fact the most of the others have got worse - age? injury? or somethinmg else. Yet all three have had 3 poor seasons under 3 different managers - is it still the manager then?
