It isn't working. That's the fundamental thing. We threatened when we moved the ball with pace and purpose, when we focussed on getting the ball wide to Bellamy and backing him to beat Guiterrez to the ball. We created several chances doing that, or by hitting long balls to Carroll, who might make something of his career if he can play the full 90 the way he played the first 15 minutes.
But after we went behind we had nothing in the tank, and never looked like getting back on even terms. We even moved Bellamy to the left where he simply hasn't been good enough this season to suggest this game would be different. And of course, every single attack just HAD to go through Gerrard, who was having one of his worse games by over-hitting nearly every pass longer than 10 yards and never being anywhere when we didn't have the ball.
We, to quote Eddie Izzard, "slowly collapsed like a flan in a cupboard".
No one has a defined role. Suarez clearly didn't have any idea what he was doing wide on the left, which meant we had absolutely no width on the left. So he wandered around and the play generally passed him by because he was never in the right place. We didn't play 4-3-3. We had a back four and 6 players who camped in the right side of the pitch with no room to move and no structure to their play. We were falling over each other so much Flanagan had to dodge his team mates when he went forward. It's hardly surprising Ben Arfa had a field day - he had half a pitch to run into with only Enrique to beat!
That kind of tactical meltdown is not the mark of a man in charge of himself and his team.
