GERRARD TO UNDERGO HAMSTRING SCAN

Rafael Benitez has revealed that Steven Gerrard will undergo a scan later today after the skipper left the field during the 1-0 FA Cup defeat by Everton.

Substitute Dan Gosling's late winner broke Liverpool's hearts and ensured Everton set up a fifth round tie at home to Aston Villa.

The Reds ended the game with 10-men after Lucas Leiva was sent-off for two bookable offences in the second half, but it is the injury to his captain that is a major concern for the boss.

"I don't know how long Steven will be out for," said Benitez.

"He was injured and he asked to come off. He will have a scan tomorrow and we will have to wait and see.

"I am really disappointed to have gone out of the FA Cup. To play for a long time with 10 players and then to concede a goal right at the end from a deflection, we have to be disappointed.

"The turning point of the game was the sending-off but I prefer not to say anything about that.

"You can lose players which is part of the game but when you play with 10 players and they are working as hard as they did tonight it was really bad luck at the end."

Despite the disappointment of such a late defeat Rafa still insists the season could end in glory.

"We now have to concentrate on the Premier League and the Champions League so there is still a lot to play for," he said.

"They are two massive competitions and we are in a very good position."

The boss also defended his decision to substitute Fernando Torres for Ryan Babel in extra-time and said: "Torres was really tired and that's why I took him off.

"He needs to keep playing games and keep training because his match fitness is not the best but that will come."

now that Gerrard is out for a few weeks (likely with hamstring), I just hope Benitez plays Ryan Babel in Stevie's position instead of using Dirt Kuyt to partner Torres. Fingers Crossed!

is rafa really getting criticism for bringing on babel for torres? torres was shattered and needed to come off ffs and, much as i dont think babel works hard enough normally, babel played well last night, caused the snot all sorts of problems and should have had a pen

Of course it's never ideal to lose your best player to injury at any stage but right now the timing is not that bad. After sat game v Portsmouth we don't play again until Feb21st v Man City. That gives stevie g almost 3 weeks to recover from what is hopefully a tweak. It also means he will miss out on the international match next week - could be a blessing in disguise.

Thats Right CrazyGame.

Always bad to lose a quality player. But considering are next game against a top 5 rival in the league is'nt until Man united March 12th.

Would'nt be surprised if rafa has told babel im gonna give you more of a look in. But you have until the end of the season. I'll be bringing in someone in the off-season the quality off the signing will depend on you.

not surprise Gerrard has torn his hamstring - no matter how you look at it, no player can play every game.
I defended Benítez last week when he took Gerrard off against Wigan and took some stick for it - but in that game he looked knackered come the 2nd half. Tired players are more at risk of injuring themselves. It was argued that Carra has played the same amount of matches as Gerrard but you can't tell me a central defender runs more miles in a game than a midfielder!
Torres came off last night to protect him from injury - that too was the right decision in my opinion.
As Crazygame writes, the timing is pretty good all considered.

Gerrard will be out for 2 weeks. He came out as a precaution. And he has shown on previous occasions that he is a quick healer

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard will be out of action for up to 3 weeks after scan results showed that he has suffered a tear in his left hamstring.
