If you look at the three teams in this country that can pay the huge prices for players and the massive wages to go with them, the rest of us haven't got a chance of attracting world class players, look at Arsenal last night,they haven't got many in that team and VP will probably be off in the summer. Even Man utd haven't attracted many big names so it leaves me to assume its only money and the success that brings that will attract the players leaving most teams here in trouble, my point is we here are being left behind Europe as the good players are choosing to go there, what will this league become? A home for the less talented unwanted dregs or will we benefit as a league amongst ourselves from a more even playing field? Hope ive got my point over ok?

I think we should forget about Europe at least for the next 2 years.
We are a WIP and must focus on our game. Next we must at least win both the Carling and FA cups this season, next season we maske an earnest attempt for the number one spot in the EPL.
imo if we can pull this off, then and only then can we think about Euro.

imo if we can pull this off, then and only then can we think about Euro. I see your point Brian,from where we are at the moment 4th comes before 1st and as we are struggling for 4th then 1st is a long way off at the moment, however my point on this thread is that all the teams are struggling to compete with Europe in attracting players even those with money, what only two/three that can compete financially, we have only Chelsea left in Europe/CL so there is a change occuring and i wondered how peeps felt on how this will effect our League? will it be better as in a level playing field or terrible without top notch players due to them all being in Europe somewhere.?

Liverbird, yes that does make sense in that the EPL could be affected should "top" players ply thier trade elsewhere.
I use "top" in the weakest sense possible, because money can't buy quality.
Just look at Africa, I mean Zambia just won the Africa Cup of Nations and that is a country without a lot of money.
So we need to go back to our youth academies and nurture the talent that is already there (how did the Euro "Top notch" players get to be "Top notch" in the first place.
Also with the prolonged recession in Euro at present, I wonder just how much money there is left.

The league is seemingly going downhill in terms of class. Obviously losing the likes of Ronaldo and Fabregas to Spain was a huge blow to the league and a lot of player now see it as a stepping stone to a Spain or Italy move. I think that may also have something to do with the physical aspect of the game as well as financial reasons. Players get 15 or so professional years and in that time they want to earn as much as possible for their retirement and understandably so. If they're continually getting injured, who wants to pay for them to sit on the bench? The pace and physical aspect of the English game makes those top players question how long they can be there without picking up serious injuries. All I can say in this respect is thank god for Manchester City.

Yes, Arsenal as opposed to city have a wage structure and as you know wenger wont pay over the odds for players which although at this time gets you nowhere it may be that type of stance that is needed to get the ball rolling of going back to roots of bringing in players from our academy etc,that maybe the best if not only route to take,not many will want that and it may sound naive but clubs are going down the pan because they are ALL living beyond their means. I think one day there will be no choice as we cant keep expecting fans to pay for the ever increase in tickets, Its simplistic and naive maybe but although i cant tell what the outcome will be, im sure of the fact that it cant go on as it is, We i believe are seeing the signs already with only one team left in the CL and i dont see them going far.

I think that the EPL has been behind in terms of quality of football for a while, especially behind Spain. We have exciting football because it's kick and run stuff for the most part with possesion changing all the time. In Spain, it's a lot more technical and a bit slower so some may think it's not as good.
There is also the cultural difference between here and Spain or Italy.

There's always been a bit of ebb and flow in the fortunes of the top teams in England, Spain and Italy with German teams getting in on the act from time to time also. I wouldn't get too alarmed just yet. However if EPL clubs were to suffer the huge loss of revenue for dropping out of the CL for more than 2 or 3 years running it would become a problem for those without the sugar daddy backup. On the point about attracting top players I think the EPL is still a huge draw for up and coming players world wide, failure in the CL may have more to do with the lack of top class coaching and management in the EPL, there is a different approach required which most EPL managers dont have. I think the money which is still attracting top players.
