Don't completely dismiss the beemers. Have a werd with the stealers, and check out some of the customer review sites like 'Peach or Lemon'.
Audis are also great now too, but if it's a diesel, beware of these bloody DPF's,
as they are giving loads of grief to many manufacturers models now, especially if the car isn't driven per their recommendations.
