What is "respect" exactly? I've had a bust up (pre-season) in the comments section of the News on this site for daring to suggest that AVB's record at Porto was worthy of respect, and that we should not just laugh him off as some hack simply because he works for a rival football club. I was immediately slandered for being a Londoner. Sometimes I enjoy making wums look stupid, but I figured this was some guy from the "neanderthal" group and steered clear because I'd be wasting my time even more than normal.
Just because I'm capable of seeing a rival manager as (potentially) being good doesn't mean I support his club, wish him well in contests with my own etc etc - that's stupidity. But some people could try to remember that football managers are also people, and therefore have traits both admirable and despicable.
Fergie rules with an iron fist, deserves respect because of what he has achieved with his club, but respect only goes so far if one tries to stretch the bounds. He absolutely crosses the line time and again, perhaps feels he can because of the weak willies in the FA, and stirs the pot as much as he can with LFC precisely because of our rivalry. We would do the same in his shoes. If he ever equals Paisley's 3 European Cups no man could dispute he's the best British manager ever. Any man could look at his record and take something of value were one not so blind to believe that as a rival he can teach us nothing.
Doesn't mean I want history to have been different.

Doesn't mean I want history to have been different. All good points. Alex Ferguson is probably one of the Best British mangers ever, and probably the best manager of this generation. He has an unprecedented record of winning trophies, just because he manages United does not mean we are not allowed to give him some respect.

If Dalglish has 25 years like Ferguson has had none of us will be complaining. In the 1980’s when we were at the top and they were where we are now Fergie made his famous knock Liverpool off their perch statement. It was for the press he admired Liverpool and looked and learnt. In 2011 when the situation is now reversed we would do well to look and learn ourselves. The other thing I would say is Utd’s success has not just been Fergie back then our turnover was roughly the same or slightly better than Utd. Now they are a massive ground, turnover light years ahead of us and a better commercial product. Something we might care to reflect on. Making stupid comments like whisky nose are fine but it won’t progress this club which I presume is what we all want ? Stanly. Kenny and fergie are quite different individuals and the ethos of Liverpool football club is quite different from ManU’s. It is simply more than just about winning trophies and money. Allow me an example. Many many years ago, the Man United team played in Singapore and LFC played on the same grounds about a few weeks later. After the game, the United players refused to shake hands with the local players. I must admit the local players were s.h.i.t.e. and got thrashed by United but that no way to treat a vanquished opponent. Liverpool FC played and after the game shook hands with everybody. LFC as a football club understands that it is more than just a football institution but also need to be good role models. Would Kenny’s Liverpool allow such a thing to happen? The young too look and learn. Anybody remember the incident with a young Robbie Fowler thrashing a hotel room drunk on stardom. A senior player walks in, can’t remember his name, locks the door behind him and sorts out the young lad, I hear with his fists. Liverpool FC to me is the complete football club. I am a fan not only because of our trophies, but because of what we represent. This is just one example to list all would take too long. I am not taking anything away from fergie in footballing terms but I will take nothing more than that.

Doesn't mean I want history to have been different. What is "respect" exactly? The term is subjective to an individual. I suppose I would say I respect Nelson Mandela for what he did for his people or Mother Teresa for what she dedicated her life too. These are traits worthy of respect. I suppose I don’t respect Steven Gerrard for his football skills but rather admire them. But I do respect him for his loyalty to LFC. I think loyalty is a trait worthy of respect. I can’t say I enjoy making anyone look stupid but then again I have nothing to prove.

We can all acknowledge what trophies fergie has won and that's fine, but it doesn't warrant outright respect,i could find a tad more respect for someone who had the humility to show some grace in defeat if nothing else, also pay tribute to the oppositions efforts, his comments yesterday against Newcastle, Ferguson said: “Everyone – including the referee – was astounded by the decision. It was one of the worst decisions I have ever seen.
“The referee was put in a terrible position, but why can’t he overrule it when he is only eight yards away? The problem is that referees are full-time and linesmen aren't. Whether he ever gets a game again is not for me to decide, but it was an absolutely shocking decision.” OK! with the advantage of replays shown it didn't look a penalty, but show respect for him after saying that? i don't think so,not for me we all know he does this sort of thing all the time. There are No excuses for it.

Spit it out Faz! backed Rafa for what? dont talk about being humble and giving credit to other teams when liverpool supporters give 100% backing to benitez who has never been humble and has never given credit to anyone just fought with other manager and officials down the years , just total hypocrisy in my opinion , ferguson des what he does its wrong but when benitez did it he was right as i say just hypocrisy .

First of all either have the guts to name me as hypocrite in the first place instead of hiding behind the most LFC fans headline, and if you use my posts to get your point over quote the whole post not just the parts that suit your gripe, also my post has nothing to do what so ever about Rafa its about Fergie and that's because we have done the Rafa moans on other threads so again stop hijacking every post to get your tiresome thoughts over. But just to stroke your ego ill comment on Rafa,I admire Rafa for his successes for us regardless of his faults, it changes nothing about my lack of respect for Fergie mostly because the two have nothing to do with each other,if your desperate to have your weekly rant then start your own Rafa/Fergie comparison thread.
