This is an example why he doesn't deserve blind respect, irrespective of how much he's won - and there's no way I'd regard him as the greatest.

Football is about much more than simply clocking up victories and trophies. It's about how you achieve it too.

It's the people's game. I guess 95% of teams don't win trophies but they give pleasure to people, communities, younsters through to grandparents, factory workers and millionaires. That pleasure they provide isn't restricted to one's own team - after all, it takes two teams to produce a decent game and many teams to produce a good league.

The players and managers that earn the greatest respect are those who themselves respect all others involved in football including opposition teams, fans, referees and even journalists. Fergie is a disgrace in this respect. Not fit to clean the boots of Clough, Paisley and Shankly.

Your just bitter mighty LFC. I hated Fergie for years but you have to credit or else you appear as you do. Your logic is flawed too has Fergie not given pleasure to the man utd followers or communities round Manchester? I suspect he has. Shankly and Paisley were great managers but Shankly in particular has similarities to Fergie he certaintly was big on the mind games a big big motivator and when he had to was ruthless. Paisley also was ruthless. You dont become one of the games greats by being like the local vicar.

I hear what you're saying guys but I just don't agree.

Yes, Fergie has given pleasure to the people of Manchester. That's natural - it's his team. But someone like Shankly gave pleasure to even the neutrals. So many people outside of the Liverpool family have affectionate memories of their encounters with Shankly.

I was watching a documentary on the 1974 FA Cup and an interview with Malcolm McDonald. His lasting memory was how Shankly consoled each and every Newcastle player before congratulating his own players. His words to McDonald were something like 'Don't worry son, be strong (I think SuperMac was crying) - you'll be back again one day'. Shankly is then seen to be talking to the Newcastle players collectively.

Yes Shankly, Paisley and all successful managers need to be ruthless I guess and have similarities with Fergie. However though perhaps small, the differentiating factors are significant. The top class people are ruthless whilst maintaining civility, respect for others and common courtesy.

What did the poor journalist say wrong that deseved the treatment he got? nothing. It's pure arrogance and rudeness on Fergie's part.

I guess what I'm saying is that the likes of Fergie, Mourinho achieve success by vitiating the atmosphere, i.e. they're 'Toxic' (as one of our favourite friends would say). In contrast, the true greats earn respect and affection by the way they conduct themselves.

(btw, trust me - I'm not bitter at all. When I was younger, perhaps yes. But i don't take football that seriously nowadays. I enjoy the wins, good performances, anything LFC; but defeats and opposition characters including Fergie don't bother me at all. The footballers are going to earn millions either way, so why should I lose sleep or get angry or negative if my team wins or if Fergie behaves the way he does. Our real friends and family are much more important than people we don't know. Doesn't mean that I don't have an informed opinion though)

Very hard to judge an era from the 1960's / 70's to today where every utterance is broadcast and with the internet / media. Shankly was great friends with matt busby and after Liverpool sacked (which they all but did disgracefully) Shankly spent a lot of time at old trafford with his friend sir matt who incidently was an ex liverpool player. Shankly was a great winder upper of the opposition I think he would have thrived in todays world with mass media he would have loved it. I have a theory if Shankly was alive today and Man Utd manager you would hate him. In terms of Ferguson I have heard quite a few things through people who know him personally (he lives in Wilmslow) and everything I hear is good, he is a decent man. His wife ? thats another story she is really stuck up ex govan woman made good and she likes to let people know.

No Liverpool fan ever called him the greatest, We never will.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footbal...x-Ferguson.html

Says a lot about then at the start and as single minded as he has been he is still wothy of his achievement of a quarter of a century in charge of one club.

So lose the Man attitude o this one and just give him some Kudos for something.

The fact he is a horrible b*stard where football is concerned is a fight for another day, but he is a legend to theirs and we would expect the same respect for Shanks and Paisley which we get.

So fair play

PS as for the poor journalist today, there are no poor journalists I have ever seen and I would kil them before fergie, close second admittedly

There's no denying his achievements as a manager - he's one of the best ever - which ensures he gets respect, but there's so many things to take issue with the way he goes about it

His bullying of referees, his disdain for reporters (especially those from the BBC) and his general refusal to do things that are in the remit of his job - post-match press conferences for example

Of couse the FA are the biggest wankers here for letting him get away with it for so long - but the way he conducts himself in his professional life is a disgrace

Perhaps the biggest irony of all is that in his personal life he's one of the most welcoming, courteous and interesting individuals you could ever meet - and a lifelong Labour Party supporter and any rich man who backs them must have his heart in the right plasce (if not his head!)

If the criteria to be a top manager is you need to be successful for 25 years and be a clone of mother Theresa then I think we fans are in for a very long wait. Fergie is not perfect but most of his antics are borne out of passion to be successful. The spat with the BBC was from a documentary they did about his son I think he was wrong not to speak to the BBC because at the end of the day Manchester Utd fans were the ones who paid by not hearing what the manager wanted. But I thought I would point that out. To be honest if LFC had someone with Ferguson’s qualities for the next 25 years (flaws and all) I don’t think many of us would be unhappy.
