Reina 6 - Flapped at a couple of crosses but never looked like conceeding untiol the panalty and was generally his usual reliable self after an off-day against Tottenham
Kelly 7 - A performance that underlined what we had missed in the last couple of weeks. Good, especially defensively where he prevented what looked like a certain goal in the closing mins of the first half
Carragher 6 - Generally solid although will be disapppinted with conceeding the penalty that led to the goal
Coates 6 - An inconsistent performance that included a couple of howlers and a couple of vital blocks/clearences. Shpuld improve with experience
Robinson 5 - Didn't really get into the game in the way he would have liked and looked uncertain in some of his defensive duties
Kuyt 6 - Started lively on the right, seeing a lot of the ball and linked up well with Suarez and Bellamy, although struggled in the second half until his goal which effectively killed the tie
Spearing 6 - Seemed a little too eager to impress but was pretty solid until the penalty incident, where he was primarily to blame
Lucas 7 - Another disciplined display where he put himself about without being wreckless
Maxi-Rodriguez 5 - Didn't see a tremendous amount of the ball and never really got into the game
Suarez 6/7 - Fluffed a couple of chances he would have usually buried but linked up well with Bellamy in the first half although grew increasingly fristrated in the second. Wise move taking him off for Gerrard
Bellamy 7/8 - MOTM - At times he seemed almost unplayable in the first half, linking up superbly with Suarez amd Kuyt and was unlucky to hit the post with a suiperb free kick. Less involved in the second half but underlined what he brings to the team
[SUBS]
Gerrard 6 - Kept it simple but it was great to see him back again
Flannagan 3 - Might seem harsh but the only contribution I saw was when he gave the ball away twice in dangerous positions in his own half

reina, 6. solid enough.
kelly, 6. did well. looked like he was easing his way through the game, didn't really go forward, even when we were the better team in the first half.
carra, 5. he was carra. a bit good, a bit bad, a bit indifferent.
coates, 6. slightly better than carra. i don't like to judge players too early. but he looks like a big brainless meat-ball-ed to me, slow and clumsy. i really hope im wrong.
robbo, 6. attacking; when he went forward he went too early and too far. defending; again he had no protection from maxi just like against exeter.
kuyt, 8 MOTM (for us). when we were on top he was putting on a footballing master-class. he got his goal and covered his full-back. all-in-all very good from dirk.
spearing, 4. awful.
lucas, 6. shame he had to play with spearing.
maxi, 4. added nothing to the game. when he is bad he is just invisible, and he did nothing to help his very young full-back
suarez, 5. should have scored at least 1, he was very wasteful throughout the game. shouldn't be played in this competition again unless we get one of the top 3 sides.
bellamy, 7. good performance from him, worked hard, was our most dangerous player.
subs; gerrard, 10000000. just brilliant to have him back. now our midfield might actually have bit of get-up-and-go in it.
flanno, 3. didn't realise he came on.

Never mind the individual performances, I'm more concerend that as a team we really didn't look that impressive considering we were up against players a league below us and had a point to prove after Sunday. If Utd, City, Chelsea were playing they'd probably have put 4 or 5 past them quite comfortably. Our squad just isn't strong enough. Despite all the money spent on midfielders that is where we looked the weakest.
Lucas is 'ok' and does a basic job with his limited ability. Spearing - never in a million years is this guy going to improve our team Rodriguez - is good 1 minute then goes missing for a few months
We were lucky to get through and our progression is going to be dependant on drawing easy teams.

We were lucky to get through and our progression is going to be dependant on drawing easy teams. United and city played a teams lower down than Brighton and didn't put 4 past them. And Chelsea didn't score in open play. My biggest concern is that we're not putting our chances away. It's been like that all season. Once we can get clinical, that's when the confidence will grow. If we put our chances away today, we could have been up by 3 at the half.

I think that's a little harsh tbh We were far from brilliant but i think it was adequate enough response from Sunday's calamity We should have put at least three past them in the first half and whilst few will argue that they were the better side in the second i think the best team won My main concern was the chances we missed in the first half - we hit the bar about 4 times

Spearing 6 - Seemed a little too eager to impress but was pretty solid until the penalty incident, where he was primarily to blame
Pretty solid?! Really?! Spearing is a liability. Very poor in possession. Takes up awful support positions. Liability in defending and indisciplined in the tackle.Passing is average. He's a championship footballer. The fact we won yesterday with him in there is a miracle.

The problem is, his 100% is nowhere near good enough.

Don't you think that giving 100% is the minimum we should expect and deserve. If the manager can't get 100% from a player then that player or manager shouldn't be at the club. but this isnt the case these days..
