I agree that this is slightly diff from the Torres transfer but he was our most sellable asset in this transfer window. We also needed to ship out some deadwood. Was Raul deadwood? - well that's another discussion on its own

While I am slightly gutted he is gone as I always saw him as an intelligent player I still think he could have stayed and try to force his way into the team and prove beyond doubt that he deserved the pay hike. But he didn't. I eager keep a happy player who gives his all than one who ain't. I wish him good luck.

He was never deadwood. Poulsen was deadwood. But Meireles WAS a squad player (or had become one giving our midfield reinforcements), and in all honesty only got as much playing time as he did because Gerrard has been injured essentially since November (when played together the pair failed to strike up much of a partnership). Squad players will tend to be sold unless they prove themselves invaluable, and Meireles didn't quite make himself invaluable. And, as you point out, he was certainly our most salable asset.

It think it was fair that he wanted to leave, and that it was fair that we had no compunctions about selling him.

So now we go from an abundance of midfield talent to bare bones quality. We are OK as long as we don't pick up an injury or two in the hard winter months.

Kenny has his long term plan and it is obvious that he wants Henderson blooded and developing from the off, but Meirele's link up play and understanding with Suarez appears to have been totally overlooked in this topic. The pair of them ran riot last weekend after the double substitution; as they had done all last season post Roy.

Looking at the squad even two weeks ago, I thought we had a realistic chance of maybe 3rd, now I think 4th will be a good season and a push.

I don't blame anyone in a career who is lied to on salary issues, which he clearly was. Knowing from experience, it sours the whole work environment and considering it is their job why should it be any different for a footballer.

Very disappointed with this. Handled poorly yet again and at 12 million not a great deal. Have heard 14 also mentioned which is better, but we will have to ride our luck in midfield at some time this season now and gone are the days when you get away with it at this level.

Am not surprised one bit really, I can even qoute my words from yesterday to show that we were in for a torres part 2 from chelsea. I knew as soon as they bid 7m + Yossi, I knew they would make a last ditch bid. Now I am pi$$ed as most people are with the fee. 12m? Didn't we buy him around there in the first place? we should of accepted no less than 20m seriously. The guy has improved, is already an experienced premierleague player, we should of hold out or gotten Sturridge instead.

Now people can see why I wanted to keep Aquilani for depth, because we should of at least kept one of them, both of them have gone and our midfield goes back to being mediocre once again without stevie G. Disapointed with the price but as I said, not surprised at all.

Agree Snake.

I'm just confused. 3 weeks ago we were overcompensated in the midfield area with:
Aqualani, Mereiles, Gerrard, Henderson, Adam, Lucas, Spearing, Poulsen and Shelvey.

Now we have:
Adam, Gerrard, Henderson, Lucas, Spearing, and Shelvey.

So in reality we really only have 2 reliable midfielders, instead of 4, and 2 that aren't so threatening.

Have to say it's a little strange. I don't like this whole idea of Chelsea just being able to take whatever player they want of us. We're not a selling club are we?

Not a world class player but a great squad player.

We brought in Henderson and Adam so not exactly lacking in replacements and how many of us were moaning about having too many centre midfielders before.

Just hope we don't get many injuries and plus gerrard will be due back over the next few weeks.

Oh and positive spin, we are third in the league and unbeaten...
