Interesting to see Gael Clichy stoking up hostilities with United's local support by claiming "I understand that the people who live in Manchester are the true fans, They are from City". When City signed Edin Dzeko he said at the news conference "I have heard a lot about the fans and that most of the people from Manchester are Manchester City fans,". David Moyes on his arrival claimed Everton were the City of Liverpool's Peoples Club and even to this day they are called that. It just makes me wonder why these types of quotes, in separating one fan from another because of where he or she comes from still plays such an important role in todays game, it seems identity still means so much even though you can still support the same Club.

Comments like those you mentioned are simply to give the CLUBS an identity, not the fans! usually cos there's no trophies to shout about. grin

You have to admit they are recurring tho, which means I suppose football is still a tribal thing where identity is everything, maybe why Clubs like Liverpool and United get targeted more.

It's a bit disrespectful if you ask me. How often do you see Liverpool players coming out and slagging off Everton or Man Ure?

It's just the small club mentality. Man City are growing into a real force, they need to ditch the inferiority complex.

I think maybe fans like to boast about having there own identity in a time where Clubs like ourselves and United lost ours quite a few years ago. Evertonians in the City always give us reds stick about having outside support, like I supose City fans laugh at United fans for the same reason, these players know this so play on the fact when they have press conferences, its a way to get fans onside before you even start, David Moyes was a hero before Everton even won a game because of his " Everton are the Peoples Club " quote.

Is it true that Clichy said a few years ago, something along the lines of "anyone ending up at man city are there purely for the money"....

Man City and Everton both have plenty of support outside their cities too. Liverpool and Man Ure just happen to have more than them. Plus the majority of their players hail from well outside the cities too, so it's a weak point by them really.
