carroll, i will judge, when he has played 10/12 games on the bounce, and when quality wingers have been signed.

You forgot Gerrard and Kuyt has ben known to win us a few games over the last couple of seasons.
What we need is a starting XI that can play together and a strong bench. As our bench over the last few seasons have been alughable at times.

Personally I think Downing would be an okay signing - he's a better overall winger than Ashley Young despite lacking his pace and power - but not for the £20m Villa are insisting on - and the only reason they are insisting on it is because they have seen us pay £16m for Henderson and £36m for Carroll - which is the point i was getting at when i said these two signings wrere setting a very bad precedent for future signings

Had we not paid this staggering amount of money for two unproven players I'm absolutely positive Downing would be a Liverpool player already - presumably because Mata and N'Zogbia aren't the least bit interested in a switch to Anfield

Problem is its a vicious circle. As we are having to settle for the likes of Henderson, Downing etc our chances of getting the top 4 have receded further, and being out of the top 4 (and no CL) means we won't be able to sign the players we need next season and so on

if we want to get into the top 4 - we need to sign players a lot better than Henderson, Adam and Downing

That probably means taking a gamble - but paying £16m for an unproven player just because they happen to be Brish is no gamble - it's like playing Russian rulette with five bullets in the chamber

i don't care about the prices anymore. if a player add's something to our first team than we should try our best to get them.

yes their are certain players who can only play in certain leagues/countries, thats life.

downing is a good player, but spending 14/16m+ on him, i think can be used towards signing far better quality players ie hazard, sanchez, a johnson, turan, etc etc.

I didn't say average I said dependable, Players who are there week in week out producing consistent if not always sensational performances. A one/two move is still the best way to move around a player and yet it is the hardest to coach players to produce consistently. Downing and others mentioned offer simplicity in their play, If he can gain an understanding with his team mates a regular supply of quality crosses is in the making. Carroll will excel if the right service is given too him, Downing is a player who will supply this. example to prove my point;

Manu paid 17mil for Carrick which was a ridiculous price to pay for an decent/average midfielder, not the best in his position by a long way yet he now has 4 league medals and been two 3 champs league finals(won 1). price worth paying?
he was what they needed, a player producing good steady performances on a regular basis. he was bought when Alonso, Mascherano, Lampard, Fabregas, ballack,Viera(ageing), Gerrard were all vying for top dog in the centre. Yet has more medals than all put togther during that period.
sometimes to get what you need you need to pay.

I remember watching a certain John Toshack and we played the pass and move game then so I can't see why we can't now.

i agree with u on this one dependable is not necessarily a bad thing but then we would need a flair player/creator in midfield..downing is not rubbish, there r certain posters on here saying he is rubbish, he is not

And the shout about match winning players. Man u who won the league how many watch winning players do they have? Its just rooney. But still they win cuz of hard workers like valencia and park. And this is what downing would provide us.
