Hero worship. People still adore Alonso because he was and is everything that an LFC player should be. Off the pitch he has class and dignity, and has respect for the club and for the fans. He's not one of your modern egomaniac footballers, and comes across as a down to earth lad. The fact that he's returned to matches to watch the Reds at Anfield, and that he's done an exclusive interview with LFCTV about his time here show that he has LFC in his blood.

On the pitch he was just as classy. One of the most elegant footballers i've had the pleasure of watching. Fantastic passer of the ball, fantastic vision, and could hit them too. In his first 2 seasons with us he was brilliant. In the following 2, his form wasn't quite up to the previous standard. The way he was treated by Rafa was cold blooded. Did he sulk? No, he didn't. He followed it up by having his best season for us yet. To say it was because he was trying to engineer a move away is a [oops] disgrace. One good season for us, my arse.

Hero worship. Yeah, because he was a hero for us, and that's the way he should be remembered. Some people have very short memories, and maybe just like to go against the grain regardless of which way it's going. I don't believe his departure is solely responsible for our decline in the last couple of years, but it undoubtedly played a massive part. If we could re-sign him tomorrow i'd jump at it, and we'd be much better off for it. Until then, he'll go down in my book as a Liverpool legend.

Xabi was a great player but Batman is a hero.

That job interview was going so well until I realized I was fukked up on acid in the middle of a cornfield naked and talking to a scarecrow.

because he was a great player shafted by benitez and he deserves hero status

Hero status? Come off it. He was very good at times but his form/fitness was so patchy it was like we had 2 different Alonso's. As others have said, "coincidentally" he played his best for us the season after he decided he wanted to leave. A good player, yes. A hero - I think not.

he is just as much as a footballing hero than anyone , and if this is your format then the hero worship for benitez is flawed as he was good then bad but on here and other forums people like benitez and the snide argentine mascherano you would think the cr@pped golden turds , so yes xabi is a footballing hero for the right reasons he was a top player and not a snide like some who get the golden b0ll0x treatment .
