Would love this attacking setup if we had a stronger defense, except I would have SG in in the mid position, more influential there

I'm guessing it might be:

Riena/Doni

Johnson/Flano--Carra/Skrtel--Dann/Kelly--Enrique/Robinson

Lucas/Spearing--Gerrard/Adam

Kuyt/Downing------Henderson/Raul------Suarez/Mata

Carroll/Wickham

With players like Pacheco, Maxi, Alaya etc around there somewhere.

Some players there that I have reservations about Pops; Flanagan & Robinson not ready yet. Skrtel, & Spearing not 1st team players in my opinion. Would prefer Kuyt to Downing.

Yeah, but we need 2 for every position. Flano and Robo would be first choice just yet, but if they're in the team, they can have chances to train and play games when needed.

Downing offers something completely different to Kuyt, he's a real wide man, when Kuyt comes in more.

Been thinking about games where we could rest Carroll, typically those where we would need to unlock a stubborn defense:

Given that Kelly can bring the ball up from the back, we can easily have 8 attacking players. I know Gerrard is not perfectly suited to the left of midfield, so if he is partnered with Adam they would switch (Adam is left-footed), otherwise leave Henderson to cover the right. If we need to get more defensive we can sub Adam/Henderson for Spearing and change to a midfield square with 2 holding mids.

Having said that, opponents that park the bus may bring out the best in Carroll, as we will have lots of opportunities to float the ball into the box from deep/wide areas.

Thats more in line with what they did against Chelsea. Dunno if its more unlocking then pushing the oppositions fullbacks into their side of the field constantly and countering through the flanks. I would throw Kuyt up top though in such a formation and Suarez operating behind him in the free role. Stevie next to Meireles.

Still dreaming of Sakho I see. So am i but Mata is my #1.
