I think you'll find that our form heightened our expectations. We have that West Ham/WBA game in us, and unfortunately it came a game too early. For all 'Arry's post-match carrying on, Spurs were poor outside Dawson, King, and Modric; we just happened to be worse because we lacked cohesion, so our crucial passes were going astray.

But a bad day at the office is no more the herald of the end of the world than 5-2 at Craven Cottage is the sign of a new dawn. The herald of a new dawn is that for 17 games we've been in the top 3 in this "more difficult than normal" league, where for the 20 prior to it we struggled to hold onto 12th.

We may not win the title or even challenge for it next season, but we're definitely on the rebound, and it's not so difficult to see that the gap between 6th and 4th is small.

In hindsight this defeat might be a blessing in disguise - it should certainly act as a wake up call that whilst big strides have been made since Kenny has taken over, we still have a considerable way to go to get back to where we ought to be

Also with Man Shity and the Chavs due to spend big money over the summer, and with Wenger finally realising that he too must dip into the funds to maintain Arsenal as a top 4 team - it's only going to get harder next season

Since Kenny has come in we've only lost 1 game to sides in the top 12, winning 7.

5th position is still very possible, spurs are playing a team fighting relegation we are playing a team that cant go down - big difference need a bit of luck of course - but if we play like against spurs we will get a draw at best

my fag packet calculations indicate 26points dropped from the bottom 6 this season. that is shocking and probably more of an indicator where we need to improve. The por refereeing caused the game to be start stop and certainly a few players got frustrated, this took our eye of the ball.
as others have said out of the Dalglish 17games only a handfull 3/4 have been poor. Hodgson on the other hand was the opposite with only 3/4 of his 20 being decent. significant progress aibeit with a bump or two, this will continue for at least another season. Players need to become hardened winners and this takes time.

We have been poor against the bottom table clubs, but I'm sure that's not something in which we are unique this season. The lower table clubs did very little parking of the bus, and I think in some cases there was some overconfidence prior to a fall. Under Kenny we picked up most of our injuries against these teams, including a rather heavy number of hamstring problems, and as I showed elsewhere, in the league, except for Kenny's first game (against Blackpool), we only lost those where Meireles limped off or didn't play (and an injury to him helped cost us 2 points against Wigan). That's not necessarily an indication that we need him more than any other player, merely that we cannot cope in his absence.

Which is good...

...But as I said during the 2008-09 season there's no point on beating sides like Chelsea and Man Utd and then losing to the likes of West Ham and Blackpool

And this season demonstrates that better than ever given that despite comfortably beating Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City at home, we've been uable to despatch Wigan, Blackpool and Everton - three sides we ought to be beating (especially at home)

Winning against the good sides but losing to the lesser ones is the sign of an inconsistent team - not a good one

all the signs are there though that our highs are indeed high. one area we have improved even over last season under Rafa is our control of possesion. Yesterday was a positive example of getting back that extra 5-10% lost since Alonso went. Obviously what you do with it is as important or an Arsenal scenario develops, but you are generally less likely to conceed if your possesion is in the 60% area.

If we can address the squad inbalance and develop a style which suits the players we have I am indeed hopeful of greater things. I have watched Chelsea and Man City recently and there powerhouse style of play is boring albeit effective. The academy players and reserves are playing some really good stuff and I am confident that the one pass/move philosophy will again permeate through the club.

it was 2 very even teams playing and one team got a bit of luck.
