If it only works in the lower leagues, then how is it that we scored the first two against Birmingham using it? Given free roles, Gerrard and Meireles could make something of it. I accept that this would not be our "main" formation, as we'd rather have some width to feed Carroll, but it's a decent fall-back if Carroll is injured (and we start Kuyt and Suarez up front) or if our winger is crocked (or would we revert to 3-5-2?). And it can become 4-3-3 easily enough, though maybe not with those 11 players. I have to believe that Kenny's 2 lines of 4 lately has had more to do with protecting Flano and Robbo than because that is how he wants us to play going forward.

whilst I think it looks like a tidy team, would much rather see us play with wingers.

In which case we must sell Aquilani, which is really what the debate is about. There's no place for him in an orthodox 4-4-2, and Suarez has not lit up the world playing wide on the left with Carroll as a target man.

lads forget about aquilanni. he was a non event, and should be left in the past. just flog him for a few quid and let kenny get in the right guy.

how were we playing that formation against blues?

raul lucas jay maxi

kuyt saurez

when were we playing a diamond with those players?

and when you talk about 433 we couldn't do that successfully without majors changes to the starting line-up as suarez can't play on either wing and carroll isn't mobile enough to play in that formation. gerrard has never played well in a 3 man CM trio and we don't have a good enough sitting DM, so that formation isn't really doable. 352 is horrible unless you want to just defend, defend, defend

i like aqua and think he can be even better then raul. i think with kenny and the passing game we seem to be paying he would be a very good option

Until we were 2 up Meireles never left the center of the pitch, Kuyt was not tracking back (as he does when he's RM), and I don't recall Maxi spending much time on the left touchline. After the second goal we stuck to 2 banks of 4 seemingly to stop them getting back into the game. Clearly you saw it differently to me, so I'm not going to argue about it.
