I've got to show my appreciation to Dirk because when we awarded the penalty, i was so nervous and could feel the tension in the atmosphere. Everyone knew it was the last kick of the match.

'He's going to hit it over the bar' I said to my wife.

"and there's just too much pressure!" I kept saying to myself over and over again.

When he struck it, i could barely look and had already forgave him for missing as the circumstances was just too tough.

Why can't you believe he scored? He has never missed a penalty in a red shirt if my stats are correct. I was very confident he would put it in, class act.

I just felt that under the circumstances, it being the last kick of the game and that it was a do or die case.

Imagine how distraught we and he would be if it failed to go in....these were all going through my head at the time.

agreed malc, i would have worried about anyone taking a penalty under those circumstances. the great thing about dirk is the absence of ego. he doesnt think "oh what will people say about me if i miss", he just seems to do everything for the club and not himself. when he eventually hangs up his boots he will be missed terribly. Memories of his poor touch on the ball will rightly fade and we'll remember him for his incredible and unequalled work rate, his humility, his effort to ensure comradery with his team mates, and his ability to pop up just when you need him most.

youve had your critics dirk but i think your unwavering loyalty has given you what you deserved. lfc legend status.
