Liverpool striker Andy Carroll's career will stall if he does not curb his drinking habits, according to England boss Fabio Capello.

What about Capo's choice of first team Captain against Wales ?

Too right! It's okay to have the odd good time, but a drinking habit should be anathema to a professional sportsman. You put on unnecessary pounds, you lose pace, and your wits dull. I know King Kenny wasn't (and isn't) shy at the bar, but this is a different era, and honestly I agree with Wenger's stance.

Capello's captain is likely chosen for his swansong. Barry is being pushed out of the side by younger talent, and isn't likely to reach Euro 2012 in any capacity other than as a squad player (assuming he's even in the squad at all). I just hope that Carroll is not over-used - that he gets the job done in an hour and comes back to us fit and hungry for more.

Yes I agree, love the odd pint myself, but regular or binge drinking is just not on for professional sports people. I hope Kenny takes a firm line against it as Wenger has and Capello should also, if he wants the england team to perform to their potential. I really hope Carroll respects his career and gives the booze a wide berth, also hope he returns fit from england duty.

Thundyr, recent studies show, (courtesy of Mens Health Magazine), that drinking in moderation in fact sharpens mental performance in males.

Why has Fabio brought up this now. I haven';t heard anything about Carroll being out on the p!ss recently. I remember hearing stuff about him when he was at Newcastle, but what has he done now to bring this up.

Surely the lad ain't at home getting wasted.

Yeah but drinking what? Shots of anything almost certainly don't count, for eg. If you're talking a glass of red wine or maybe a whiskey, then fair enough, but we both know Carroll doesn't chill in front of a good book sipping Merlot.

I love a pint ot two love it!!!! But I am not a professional footballer

But if I had the chances Andy Carroll has given all what we know about its impact on athletes then I would serously think about giving it up altogether. How would you feel say at 32 knowing maybe you could have been a better player if you had looked after yourself more? You still have 50 plus years to drink.

Robbie Fowler you listening?
