I think I will go back to murphs comment about not having defensive midfielder at all. I think we are too obssessed with this role and feel we must have it at this club. I disagree with that completely. Having 4-5 Intellegent midfielders who can both attack and defend is the best combination. Just imagine what this midfield can do:

Sanchez-Gerrard-Adam-Hazard(Tomas) ,cheaper option)
Meireles ahead of them if we are playing 1 striker.

its a quality squad of players we need though strength in numbers and various options. there will be games away from home playing against stronger opposition. we need options that will allow us to approach different matches with different systems. just imagine poulsen was actually any good, we'd be a much better side.

Total football, pass-and-move; these things need players with skill on the ball and an ability to read the game. The more we have of these players the less we will need one-dimensional shin breakers like Mascherano and Carragher.

we are miles no light-years away from a total football midfield and even trying to go there would be a massive mistake we need some good players in midfield i.e sissoko, adam, m'vila (no im not suggesting we buy all 3) these are good players who are much better than lucas, spearing and poulsen total football it's just a pipe dream for us atm

2.M'Villa.
3.Sissoko.
4.Lassana Diarra.
5.Mendy.
6.Medal.
7.Fofanna.

I would agree with Murph75 box to box midfielders with good creative passing ability gives more options, but where to find them? We don't need more 'future prospects' we need em up and running now. We also need at least one top class winger and in my opinion two full backs at left and centre

Scott Parker and Tiote from Newcastle would be decent purchases to the squad. I quite like the lad Javi Martinez at Bilbao.

steven defour does look a good player. always out injured though of late. last thing we need is yet another injury prone player

Sissoko will be better than Mascherano
