gerrard can link up with torres and suarez, imagine gerrard playing just behind them both and raul covering below gerrard in midfield with two wingers on each flanks!it would be an ideal attacking play of football!

if you watch the video you can tell that Torres Gerrard and suarez would be a formidable attack. However, can they all stay fit for a whole season?

4-4-2. Gerrard is no CM. Meireles has not shown himself to be good enough as an MCd (though maybe I'm being a bit harsh on him here since we play with him as a second DM which might not actually suit him). We own no wingers. I think your plan is a long way from where we are now unfortunately.

And if Torres is injured? Then what? Suarez and Kuyt? Hmm, actually that could work, I guess.

At the risk of repeating myself, the problem with spending a fortune on a striker is that we still need wings, Gerrard is not a good CM, 4-4-2 leaves Cole in the reserves, and we do not have the depth to support two strikers over a 50 game season. Maybe this:

-------------Reina-----------------
-Kelly---Carra---Agger---Coentrao?-
-Gerrard-Meireles-Aquilani-Aurelio-
---------Torres----Suarez----------

However, that side looks weak defensively. We need Carra's leadership and Agger's passing but neither player is complete enough without a really good ball winner ahead of them, and Meireles that ain't. Maybe Meireles+Lucas can work, but you'll just hear more people complaining about Lucas.

I also don't understand this idea that 4-4-2 = attacking football. We scored 77 in the EPL playing with only 1 striker and our main gun was fit for at most 2/3rds of the season, and we scored 3 or more in 6 consecutive games which included ties vs Man U and Real Madrid. "Attacking football" is a mindset, not a formation.

There is something to be said about a 4-2-3-1 formation though. The holding midfielders can effectively help in attack and defend without compromising their positions. You get enmasse support while attacking as well as defending.

I am only responsible for what I write. Not for what you understand.

Exactly. A system with a lone striker is very adaptable, and I feel that playing 4-4-2 would be a step backwards for this squad. If Suarez is a "fetcher" like Rooney, maybe similar to Tevez even, why do we need him when we have SG, especially since Torres is so much more than just a finisher? While I'm sure it will impress the media and one or two people on here to revert to English-style football, I think that more people should be studying Rafa's system because it was extremely good when it worked, though maybe we don't have all the players we need for it now. Seems a waste having come so close to the title because we changed the rules of encounter to just revert to type once more.

This for me is a very effective system, the problem being when the other team park the bus,the two holding become vastly in effective unless you have a Alonso type player that is clever with the ball& his runs from deep and a Mascherano type that will nullify any counter attacks. Its a shame Alonso decided to dessert us when we were on the verge of great things.

I think the blackpool fella could help out in this situation. He's no Aonso but he can pass the ball forward which we seem to be struggling to do.
