He did well, so did Houllier, but in the end their time was up m8. Simple as that. It's not rubbishing the name of a manager, it's just looking at the reality of the situation.
You know what's really old hat? Starting threads about Benitez. It's been done and done. Liverpool FC continues on...

i cant believe he is still getting defended when the proof is on the pitch everytime liverpool play a load of dr0ss I am actually defending what was right for our club, what you see on the pitch today is years of asset stripping,a profitable sell to buy policy, how do you expect any manager to build a team of any quality when you are constantly downgrading your players, and last season it took its toll. legend well said mate. i think you got it spot on. YES rafa didnt always get it right in the transfer market but which manager doesnt but not the other managers didnt have to work with dumb and dumber or have to work their hands tied. for me i liked rafa and respected him as a man and as a manager. the only thing that i didnt like abt his time at the club was the hole ALONSO saga. i did lose some respect for him then, the treatment of alonso was woeful. I wish some pple would LAY OFF HIM.

Sharp shooting Legend. Thanks for protecting the point of this thread. There is so much going on in running a football business, and often in a weird secret way, that all most people see are the manager and the first team. I still believe Rafa did as much as he could for us, and no other manager could have stayed as long as he did, while working for those directors or even achieved as much.

I think Rafas transfer policy was poor as his judgement on younger players never worked out such as Gonzales,Babell,Insua,Lucas,Hobbs,Nemeth,Plessis,Leto,Paletta, and as for not given money to spend look at Keane for £20m at 29 years of age and then his deluded attempt to replace Alonso with the inferior Barry at the time Real had offered Snijder plus money for Alonso but as ever Rafa didn't rate him and then there's Reira£8m,Aqualani£17m,Degen,Jovanovic,Nunez,Josemi,Morientes£8m, Dossena £8.5m,the list goes on.At the time we could have signed Adam Johnson who was available for just £7m,Bale,Ramsey,Ozeil,Young,Dafour,the list goes on. A monkey could have signed Torres,Mascherano,Alonso,so apart from Reina the rest have been average or mediocre.

I have no hard feelings about benitez, but imo it was time for him to go. Anyone who says they weren't puzzled at times by some of his decision making must have a very short memory. Anyone who think he should have stayed should look at what he did in his short rein at inter. He took over mouhrinios treble winning side and took them on a downward freefall in serie a.

I still stand by the fact that if we have supportive owners when rafa was here, without paying 30m in interest every year, he would have bought many more world class players and we would have won the league more than once.
His record speaks for himself. And to acheive that with almost zero budget (he had to wheel and deal to generate funds for himself) is phenomenal.
Some of the so called fans here sound like they're ingrates.

A monkey could have signed Torres,Mascherano,Alonso,so apart from Reina the rest have been average or mediocre. Just a few points to clarify your media/murdoch infested lies; *Keane was Parrys doing,Rafas main target that season was Barry, who was playing better then Alonso, but was going to be an addition to the squad not a replacement for Alonso, his idea was to play him on the left but in the end had to settle for a cut price Riera. *We couldnt buy £14m youngsters like arsenal (walcott)so gambling in the bargain basement is always carrying risks. *Aquilaini cost an initial £5m and the rest of the Alonso sale money was going to be used for Jovetic and Turner, but the owners pulled the plug and only Kenny talked Rafa out of resigning that summer. *At the time we could have signed Adam Johnson who was available for just £7m,Bale,Ramsey,Ozeil,Young,Dafour,the list goes on.The same nonsense can be applied to all the managers who didnt sign these players you know moroninho, taggart wenger etc. Did you not see how those fuc$ing owners tried to drag us onto the administration rollercoaster?Dont you feel embarrased to stick the knife into a man that tried his best for us,whilst trying to build under those lying, cancer infested,[oops] yanks

Again, well said Legend....
I rate Alonso highly too and I think most people just couldn't accept that he left under such circumstances.
However, I still remember that he wasn't that good in his previous seasons and got slated many times.
And I still believe that he would have signed for R.Madrid or Barca anyway. Its the calling most Spanish players crave for.
