The 2008/9 season was one of the best the team had for many years. Runners up for the Prem, playing well and winning many games, home and away.
So. What was the massive change in our fortunes caused by?
We lost Alonso that summer, but apart from that, nothing of any great significance iirc?
Where we really THAT reliant on just one man?

i said earlier we have a hanful of really good players and some ordinary ones if the good ones were on fire we wouldnt notice the lesser one so much its only cos all are out of form its chaos, if the good ones hit form the others will follow i am sure! we kenny to gel the team

Yes, I know all that my little trout, but why did we go down the bog 'ole so rapidly after 2008/9 season is what I can't quite get me 'ed quite 'round.

I wonder if you might be right, cus I cannot think of any other world shattering event that took place at LFC that summer.
Been discussing this with another fan today, and no nearer to understanding what went so catastrophically wrong in the space of just 3 months.

Rafa spat his dummy because he didn't get all the money from Alonso's sale, bought an injured player and was stubborn as hell last year. Now we're left with too many average / below average players.

i remember thinking raffa wot the hell you doing alot of the time! loved him at times but think he was running out of ideas like all managers do at the end of there reign,he made some strange changes swapping and changing you could see the players were peeved then he fell out with alonso and i think that and the strange decisions just made players lose confidence and respect in him that can pull things apart! there endeth the lesson

I know this has been discussed many times, but I'm just trying to find the defining moment for our dreadful downfall, and it's all pointing to 'Alonsogate' so far.
Probably a great deal more than meets the eye, but we'll never be privvy to such info I suppose.

That team had players at their peak and it had balance. We had Riera down the left giving us width for the first time in ages. Carra was a couple of years younger. Arbeloa was a solid right back and of course Alonso was on fire!! The team now has no width, no playmaker and the defence is weaker due to Carra's absence and Arbeloa's versatility. Rafa bought poor players last season and even though he wasn't a success (never given a chance) we never replaced Keane either as back up for Nando..remember his goal against ARsenal...he would of came good i'm sure of it

We got Johnson that summer, but Raffa forgot to include his teddy bear in the contract negotiations!!
