All managers make bad signings but id say there is no way in hell Roy would go for players OR even be able to attract players like Alonso, Reina, Mascherano or Torres.

I cant see us being able to attract any top players with him as manager TBH. Who wants to play in a negative team thats all about defending under a guy with no presence, no fight and no clue?

Supporters with that point of view are not particularly good supporters, are they? They don't consider that the manager has to get the funding to buy players from somewhere. When you have a decent amount of money added to your transfer budget each window, net spend is indeed irrelevant. But when the owners of the club are not investing in the squad, then net spend is critical.

You can't buy anything in the football world without money, and that stuff doesn't grow on trees; you must not have studied economics. A manager without financial backing can't realistically aim at expensive (and therefore top-drawer) players, because he would have to sell half his squad to even compete in the market. Instead he has to take chances on younger or promising players (perhaps mainly from other leagues where you have a better chance of signing them), and if he buys rubbish (inevitable) then he must try to recoup as much as possible from the sale of those players so that he can try again.

Guy, you (and emp and the other Rafa-haters) need to start looking at the whole picture.

As for this thread, well, Rafa is gone and for good reason. So there's no point begging for his return. If he does ever have the opportunity to return it will hopefully not be with this squad (who he ultimately failed and will therefore struggle to perform for) but it will hopefully be with owners who will support him.
If NET amounts are so important like you say why was it never quoted under Sir Bob, Joe, Dalglish, Souey, Roy Evans and even Gerard Houllier then, why is it only quoted to cover up that monster Benitez incompetencies in the transfer market with poor buys. So according to you tell me how much Porto paid us when they GAVE us Raul Meireles, I say this because according to this NET spent thing we received 21 million pound for Mascherano just before we signed Raul for 11.5, so Porto must of paid US because we never paid out any money for him.

Is it no coincidence that when we finished 2nd and needed to add to the squad that we already had, that when the owners where getting 30 million for alonso etc and we where getting less that half. At the end of that season we should of have transfer funds to spend, but we had to sell to buy.

Look at this chart I've just searched for

http://apture.s3.amazonaws.com/0000012be...201990-2010.png

notice we made a profit in the seasons 2008/09 and especially 2009/2010

it's no coincidence that the club has gone frm 2nd to 7th, we needed to add quality to the team not just make replacements

Under Sir Bob, Joe and Dalglish, for the first too, spending was far less significant than it is nowadays and there were far fewer transfers, but even if we consider it the same, all 3 of those had so much success that it wasn't important what was spent. Liverpool had the money, Liverpool were the best, so what else matters. Must be spending the money well.

It is only when transfers become more significant in money, and when people look for things to blame that Net spend is considered. And When it comes to Evans, Sounness, Houllier, Benitez and now Hodgson, net spend has ALWAYS been considered.

The other point about Porto is so silly I don't know where to start.

We sold Mascherano, and with the money from that we gave Porto some of it, and we got Meireles. What is hard to understand about that?
Am afraid you must not of been supporting Liverpool when Houllier was manager because you will of known NET spent was never mentioned under him, Houllier was just judged and the money he spent and how good they were, thats why he was slaughtered for the likes of Diouf for about 11 million and took alot of stick for Cisse 16 million even though he had already left after Cisse arrived. The Porto point is not silly at all, I have just used your logic in that according to you it all goes on the differences in buying and selling players not what they actualy cost so Raul never cost us a penny because we had just sold Mascherano for more money, also applying your logic Dalglish was'nt Liverpool's record signing either as we sold Keegan for more just the month before neither was Dean Saunders or Stan Collymore because we probably sold a few players beforehand which means the fees we paid those players Clubs was'nt proper money, see how ridiculous this NET spent rubbish is.

I can't understand how you can't see the importance of spending more than your bringing in on sales

for instance, we got dossena, chelsea got Zhirkov

look at city, they buy silva, who can we afford! A crocked joe cole on a free

chelsea sign anelka, who do we get, ngog

rafa had to take chances on players who wernt as much value to those who where class who cost money, cus he simply didn't have the money. How do you expect to compete with the likes of Chelsea when your buying 5-10 mill players when them and city are spending 20-30 on players

you that deluded and thick not to see that!!!!!!

There's only so many times your going to get it right when spending on players between the value of 0-8-9 million. The big boys pay double even triple that on a centre half.

An is it not a coincidence that the same happened to Corinthians in brazil when hicks was in charge, they went from bein champions to being relegated because they had to service the debt. Also the Texas rangers, he ruined them and they where back in the world series this year!
