John Henry today quashed the idea that Liverpool would allow any top stars to leave in the January transfer window.

The NESV principal owner's comments follow a hands-off warning issued yesterday by Roy Hodgson with regards the future of Pepe Reina.

Henry said: "We have recently read stories about our intentions for the forthcoming January transfer window and have a sense of humour about this type of inevitable speculation.

"As everyone knows we are new to English football, but not to sport, and we are studying all options. Opportunities and value will drive spending in January and in the future.

"Our clear focus from day one of our ownership has been - and will be - to improve the club and focus on what it will take to put Liverpool FC consistently in a position to challenge for trophies.

"We intend to build this club the right way.

"Stories about our top players leaving are destructive and unwarranted but we realise that this kind of speculation is also common.

"We intend to build on the strength of the current squad, not undermine it. And I can reassure our supporters that we have no intention of allowing the team to be weakened going forward."

All this comes on a day when Hodgson outlined his plans to improve the squad in January and insisted the club could still attract top stars from around the world.

Dont expect to much guys. Before the season starts, we were promise with lots of quality players. In the end we end up with the like of Poulsen, Konchesky. WTF!

who promised that then?

apart from poulsen and konchesky i thought we did quite well in the previous transfer window considering the situation. raul meireles was a good signing but poulsen was dreadful we could of had flamini or muntari with that kind of money. konchesky will probably become a decent squad player given time.

if we could sign coentrao that would be an incredible signing. he would probably cost us around £20m but he can operate as a winger or full back, he's an ideal addition and we may just be able to attract him now his portuguese teammate is in the side. only thing is will benfica let him go midway through the season when the have to play champions league football? even if they don't make it out of their group they still have to play in the europa.

if nesv follow through with claims to "listen to the fans" then surely they know the name on everyones lips is arda turan. every successful liverpool side in the glory days had excellent wingers. even though we play with wingers the last 10 years maybe longer it seems they rarely have any effect on the game and we play mostly through the middle. doesn't make sense to me. arda can play both wings or in the hole and if we could include insua (who i hear is playing well in the turksih league) as part of the deal we could get him at a cut price in a deal which be perfect for both clubs. around £8m+

still in need of decent back up for torres too and these days you get what you pay for. my first choice would be llorente but that could prove quite pricey. we were linked with bryan ruiz in the summer another player that can operate 2 positions. there are some other options that may work out cheaper mario gomez would be one of them, if a loan deal could be made that would allow us to invest in the summer instead.

but can you really see us forking out £30m / £40m on players in a january transfer window? seems unlikely but to be honest we need to improve this already huge squad and start down sizing it too. only time will tell but it seems to me as though roy will make moves for the right players and if he is still here come january i'll be fairly confident i could trust him with the money. keep hearing nesv wanting to improve their scouting for the club so i'm sure each target will be well thought out before we make a move for anyone.
