All this talk of winger winger winger striker striker striker really annoys me. Just putting Gerrard in the hole behind Torres does not guarantee goals: the service must come from somewhere, and pardon me for pointing out that when we controlled midfield back in the day it didn't matter who played on the flanks.
The two DM gameplan does not rely on width; if you doubt me go watch Spain a bit more. It relies on creative DMs, people who have a clue about passing and controlling it, and Liverpool have none. What we are missing is the player in the Alonso mold. Meireles may be that player. Gerrard may be that player. So far we have seen neither for any period of time in that role; so I'm prepared to withhold judgement for a bit longer. But unless these two players are good there we must abandon this system entirely; the more I see Gerrard in the hole the more I see us failing to score. We need Gerrard to be where the ball is, not where we hope the ball will be.
I'd like to remind Roy, as if last season was not reminder enough, that playing 2 DMs is supposed to take pressure off the keeper, yet once again Reina was our man-of-the-match. So why are we playing 2 DMs at all? We ALL know that a system where Lucas partners another DM is a recipe for disaster, so why are we not playing Gerrard as a CM with one of Raul/Poulsen/Lucas as his partner? Yes, there's a shortage of players we can put in the hole with Cole suspended, which hopefully makes people realize how incredibly short-sighted the Aquilani loan was.
I do not want to see 2 DMs in Liverpool red together on the pitch ever again. We have fantastic attacking players and prospects sitting on the bench so that we can bore everyone including ourselves and continue to make all the same mistakes as last season.
