So Bournemouth are in talks for another loan move for Nat Phillips again. This is something we really ought to nip in the bud for players who are being constantly loaned out to the same club.
Bournemouth have had enough time to assess Phillips and it should be to buy him outright. Phillips is 25 now and it's obvious he is not going to improve enough to challenge VVD, Matip, Konate or Gomez so the time is right for us to sell him and use the funds elsewhere to bolster the squad.
We don't have a great history regarding loans to other clubs because it is plainly not improving players enough for them to challenge 1st team players when they come back. I get it, it is an easy way to trim the wage roll, however it's detrimental longterm keeping hold of players and loaning them out season after season, until they leave on a FREE.
U20's I can understand loaning them out giving them more experience, but players over 20, if they have not showed progression to challenge the 1st team need to be sold.

I think Klopp see's a long term future for Nat with us, we all know Matip could get a major injury at any point, he was great last season, but his appearance record is pretty poor while he has been with us, so I think he is loaning Nat out to give him more experience and keep him playing, rather than sat in our reserves/squad and not playing.
I am surprised a PL club has not come in for Nat, based on his performances in 20/21, I thought Gerrard might bring him in for Villa having seen him up close, then maybe he would want to leave.

This is a tough one. Realistically he is worth £5m but because he comes from us its £15m. Bournemouth have been tucked up by us a few times regarding transfers and only Solanke at Championship level has come good.
Even the likes of Bournemouth can trawl through defenders of other leagues and pick someone up for under £10m on lower wages. So why would they spend £15m when they can get Phillips on loan.
For us loaning out to another PL club may be beneficial in the points he might stop our rivals picking up. Then there is that disruption that he cannot play against us which forces team changes.
I think now Gomez has signed a new contract there is no need for Phillips so we should look to sell first if we can. There will be clubs looking at him and thinking he could do a job for them but these are all clubs who are going to be amongst favourites for relegation.

@Acca - City are currently asking for £41million for Nathan Ake...do you think Ake is that much more superior than Phillips?
Nat Phillips showed he is a decent CB, better than most PL CB's apart from your obvious top 4 teams . When he had that stint in 20/21 season when VVD, Matip and Gomez were all injured he was solid and a big reason we ended finishing the season so well to nip into the CL places.

Pickles be fair he did a job. Defended well but the whole shape of our team is based on the best players being available. If not the second best option or even 3rd best. But with Phillips in our team so many more compromises had to be made. Ten out of ten for effort and he stomps all over Ake in that regard but for everything else Ake is the far better player.
We lost 6 home games and all the heart in the world could not prevent us getting beat by 3rd rate teams. He was solid, he was decent but he is not a CL quality CB although his cv will forever have that Cruyff turn in it sending Ibrahimovic and Kessie to another universe.

I personally feel 15m is on the low side for Phillips, he's a solid, no frills, dependable PL CB.

I think Gomez signing the new deal shows that Nat does not have a long term future really, but we can only sell a player if we receive offers, maybe the Liverpool value is too high? similar to Origi, I was surprised no lower PL team came in for him.

Wasn't Gerrard after Gomez? I could see him coming in for Phillips now instead.
Forwards of the Origi ilk are tuppence ha'penny, there's a lot of them around. A solid dependable CB is a rarer commodity, Phillips got thrown in the deep end with us and came out of it with shining colours. Also add in, he got to learn with the best under Klopp's tutelage and having the likes of VVD and Matip around to learn from.

Had it not been for that season when he just had to play he was a £2M player at best. His exposure to the first team and subsequent displays at Bournemouth make him £15M now.
Don't forget he got booked 15 times between Jan and the end of the season in the Championship. If we take £15M off someone it will be another shrewd robbery.

Looking at our squad we do have a lot of bodies for defence: VVD Matip Konate Gomez N.Phillips R.Williams van De Berg B.Davies TAA Robertson Tsimikas Ramsay Norris Quansah
Neco now gone to Forest, we can get rid of some more out of defence and not leave ourselves short.
Ben Davies is one due to the fact he was bought purely because of his price tag. At the time he came in he never got a chance even when we were at our shortest due to injuries for the CB position that I have ever seen in my lifetime. Davies is on £60k pw / £3.1m a year, that's too much for somebody who has contributed diddly squat. If we can get £5m for him, get rid!
We do need to trim and bolster areas of the squad with players who are going to challenge the first XI. If we can sell Phillips, Davies, Ox and maybe try a swap with Keita & cash for Bellingham we'll be in a much better position. Leaving it until next Summer to try and get Bellingham is a mistake because there'll be more competition for him likely pushing his price up.
