Subjectivity will bring bias and inconsistency. Now everyone will be able to have a go at the ref again and we'll be back to square one.
This! Exactly, it's back to square one, I'd much rather we have a blanket rule so there is no bias.
I agree, same rule for everyone is best, but a sensible rule, having a handball for a player jumping in the air with his hand behind his back is silly.
Well... I don't think it's totally silly. We probably think that way because we still have the old deliberate aspect in our minds. My understanding is as follows:
1. If a player jumps with his hands kept down and behind his back then and the ball hits the hand then it wouldn't be considered as a handball
2. But if a player jumps for a ball, completely missed it, leaves his hand in the air (thus making himself bigger) and then the guy behind him heads ball towards goal which hits the stray hand, then I don't see a problem with giving that as handball. The player prevented the opposition from making progress with his hand. The fact that he didn't intend to it doesn't matter. Perhaps they should say that if that prevented a goal scoring opportunity then it's a penalty... otherwise it should be a free kick.
It's like cricket. Batters don't deliberately use their legs to stop the ball hitting the wicket... but if they do then they're out.
