As the upped tempo of refund of the shareholder's loan has shown, I would definitely say we need to sell in order to buy!
Our owners won't plow down any more money in the club now - they instead want to take out money. We have to be run self sufficient as they have said themselves, no matter of the circumstances in the surrounding world. The current world wide pandemic doesn't help matters either.

You know, it's nice to be self-sufficent and all, but a little help goes a long way. If they injected some cash into buying some players, we would be competitive for a long time. We have a solid squad, but also an injury prone one e.g. Keita, Matip and Ox. If we want to keep this run going, owners need to invest - we can't go by this sell before buying [oops]

It perplexes me why we need to sell to buy, seems like the only time we buy premium players like Allison and Van Dijk is when we sell a player for £100m+ We don't need to sell to buy but sometimes the right deal comes along at the right time. As it turned out we absolutely rinsed Barcelona over Coutinho. With the ages of our players we have 2 choices. Sell them at a premium and bring in 2 or 3 top players or wait for them to get to 31/32 and end up having to find money to replace them all at the same time at what will be a premium price for us to pay. Without Alisson and VVD we would have got top 4 finishes and no more. We saw that when we went out of the CL. I honestly believe we could have had that trophy again this season. Of course we need to sell to buy. Do you think we would have bought VVD and Alisson if we hadn't sold Coutinho? No way We were buying VvD in the summer 2017, it was only when Southampton threatened to report us to the FA for illegal approaches that we withdrew and bought him in the winter window before it opened, so that deal was going to go through well before we sold Coutinho.

Coutinho going was no secret, it was known well in advance. FSG knew they were in for a big payday which was going to easily pay for VVD's purchase.

No, we were trying hard to buy at a big discount by tapping VVD, and we were reported. We were lucky that City did not offer the requested fee. We signed VVD in the next window after selling Coutinho and paying what Southampton wanted. If we hadn't sold Coutinho we wouldn't have had the funds to buy VVD at the price set by Southampton

the thing that worries me and something that a lot of people have seemed to have missed, is what sort of message our lack of signings is sending to our own players. One way you could look at it is they feel comfortable. The feel like the club has faith in them as a squad. Another way of looking at it could be a lack of ambition. As a player, there will be those who want to see and be at a club where they're constantly bringing through or signing world-class players to play alongside and help the club be successful. There is a reason why Chelsea was Werners second choice. Look at the players they are bringing in that he'll be playing with. It's an exciting new project that any player would love to be involved with. The lack of ambition in the most recent transfer windows is a recipe for complacency. It risks things becoming stale and players like Mane could have their head turned just as much because of that as they could us bringing in another player that could compete with him for his position.

We need one or two, a tweak here or there. Tsimikas was a shrewd like for like purchase. We don't need Alcantara at 29 unless Gini goes to Barca. Would like to have seen us get Werner n bed him in for next season when one of the the front three will surely move.
