FA cup replays in a crowded fixture list are stupid. Even Lineker says so. The FA is so archaic and needs to change. Most countries do not have two domestic cups plus the leagues - so why do we. They scrapped the Euro cup winners cup because the fixtures became a nuisance - this strengthened the CL competition. The League cup needs to go - or just be a competition for clubs outside the prem. The FA cup games should go straight to penalties just like all the major competitions. It may even help English players become better penalty takers in international competitions. Klopp promised his squad a week off - and the U23s can give Shrewsbury a good game. He's doing the right thing here - and all the nay-sayers can get stuffed.

Klopp is absolutely right to say what he did. At the same time, I understand that replays are a big deal financially to the smaller clubs, and Shrewsberry are getting a windfall they would never have previously.

I hope the kids play and win.

Happy to play a weakened team but how can the Liverpool manager not be at an FA cup 5th round tie? That's the bit I don't get

He explained that in his press conference yesterday, the team which will be played has their own coach and he cannot just take over for 2 days, he has never coached that team. He could be there but he would only be a spectator which make sense to me. It takes some time for a new coach to know the team and get them to play his game/system, more than 2 days. When a coach/manager is sacked it is usually his assistant who takes over immediately until the new coach work with the team in training for a few days. Does that make sense?

This confirms that no senior players will be involved even the ones coming back from injury and need game time which is bizarre. Look, I 'd love to be proven wrong and the kids manage an upset but it's going to be men against boys. I feel like I've said enough in the match thread but I do not agree with Klopp at all on this situation. Him not being there is being selfish and disrespectful to the fans and to the opposition manager. Who knows if we can get past Athletico, so he's throwing away this competition and we could be knocked of cl so we will just be playing league football instead of dreaming of a historic treble or a domestic double. If we win the league it's going to be fantastic but why not go for more when we have the means to do so?

I agree with snakeeye there is nothing to stop the reserve team coach behind the scenes picking the team and tactics even being with klopp on the touchline but the fact klopp is not even there is a massive disrespect to the competition and the opposition team.

I'd imagine the original reason for why the winter break was brought in is the reason Klopp won't be there...to have some R&R with Family...possible vacation?

Don't blame him at all. I have a sneaky feeling one or two other managers are going to play severely under strength teams. This is because several bookmakers have not yet priced up FA Cup replays for next week. From what I have seen with those brave enough to give odds we are generally available at around 6/4 with Shrewsbury the same price.

My guess is that the under 23's due to play away to Wolves tonight may well be close to the team that plays Shrewsbury next week. I wouldn't be surprised if Shrewsbury send a team of scouts along to watch tonight as it's not as though they have far to travel to Wolverhampton. However their manager is almost certainly not going to be there as Shrewsbury play away v Gillingham tonight.

Another thing the game is £15 entrance while that is a good thing think about Shrewsbury who will get a minimum return from the game. I realise some will say "I dont care about Shrewsbury" but think of the wider game. Getting a big club and pay-off is a lifeline for these struggling town clubs. Football would be nothing without the lower leagues and infrastructure of the game. If you are a corporate fan you wont know what I am talking about so dont bother trying.
