It is clearly out of whack with modern football today.
Too many clubs are are prepared to have games vs Man City as friendlies and not put any effort in.
Too many other clubs are prepared to park the bus vs other teams to get a 0-0 draw.
My proposal would be.
Keep 3 points for a win 1 point for a score draw A no score draw both teams get zero points.
Also to stop teams from giving up vs larger teams. If a team beats someone by 2 clear goals they take 1 point from that teams accumulated total.
3 clear goals, they get 2 points 4 clear goals, they get 3 points 5 clear goals they get 4 points 6 clear goals they get 5 points and so on
So for West Ham vs Man City
Man City get 3 points for win and 4 points from West Ham therefore they have 7 points.
West Ham would have -4 points.
For our game Liverpool 4 - Norwich 1
We get 3 points for win and 2 points from Norwich 2 clear goals therefore 5 points
Norwich get -2 points.
Already Norwich are better off pointwise than West Ham who have up.
Palace vs Everton both get zero points for a nil nil
Basically it stops team giving up vs bigger teams and rewards teams who may lose vs Man City for putting up more of a fight.
Would West Ham have accepted a 5-0 thrashing today with that rule in place? I very much doubt.

Madness...West Ham tried but they were far inferior. It wasn’t a case of them not trying...unfortunately in sport there are huge chasms between the very best and the rest, think Tyson in his pomp and Tiger Woods...it happens, it just means teams are going to have to find a way even if it means putting 11 players behind the ball to stop City and hope they get one opportunity to score.

Aston Villa tried the 11 behind the ball today and got one goal but in the end not good enough.

Oh dear. Can’t wait until school starts again. Maybe then these ridiculous posts will miraculously dry up.

While you’re at it, how about factoring in cards? Or fastest goal scored/conceded. Subs used/unused. So many variables! Ok go back to school and spend some time writing up a thesis on this. You could be the revolutionary the football world needs.

The current situation is the result of Market Economics at work in football, meddling with the points system is akin to putting a plaster on a cancer growth.
