Vertongen is a very good player, but 5 years older than VvD, so if Vertongen is worth £250 million, then VvD is worth £500 million based on your reckoning, anyway, it's irrelevant as Barca or RM will try and low ball us for VvD in 12 months!

The season before we signed him he was out injured from Feb to Oct he even missed Southampton final defeat to United and the semi against us. I think he is a bit dodgy under pressure but a good ball player with the ball at his feet, Similar to John Stones who must be worth 600m according to your reckoning. Transfer fees is complicated for people like you

Stones was dropped half of last season when Pep wanted quality, so he's not worth £600 million, he's a good player but takes too many risks and needs a quality player along side him to cover, also thinks he's better than he is, abit like Lovren. The point is a transfer value is based on a players quality, age and value to the buying club, so at 31 if Vertongen is valued at £250 million in your mind with 2 or 3 years left at the top level, VvD has similar ability but has 7-8 years left at the top level, so is valued significantly higher. My original point is Maguire is a decent enough English PL CB who will head it all day and make last gasp tackles/blocks, but is no where near the quality/ability of VvD or Vertongen, so if he's rated at £80 million, VvD value is massively more.

Transfer fees is complicated for people like you not at all the people not understanding are the ones who mention Net spent which is false...football supporters only deal in gross and accountants and money men in Net spent. It might be true that children or the mentally impaired, incapable of comprehending things with any nuance, may think that way about transfers. In either respect, I'd usually encourage you to speak for yourself in that regard...but I fear you already are and are actually making the mistake of assuming everyone else who enjoys football is as stupid as you.

I take onboard your assessment of Maguire its pretty fair however I think we are both missing the important point and thats defending itself, Maguire at defending alone is better than both Vertongen and VVD. But successful teams rarely have players good at one thing, like just defending, look at Utd successful years, they had Ferdinand who brought the ball out, Bruce got goals, we had Hansen who was as good at playing in MF as most clubs MF players. That's where VvD & Vertongen add to a team, excellent defenders but who can step and play the ball, adding pressure during the attacks, Maguire will be fine defending, but he doesn't really improve the overall team, thats why I wasn't bothered if Utd got him or not, as he was really a straight replacement for s Smalling type player.

The problem we have with VVD is he seems to buckle a bit when under pressure, Sterling bullied him into conceding a goal in the away European leg, Lukaku bullied him at Old Trafford and even Lamela unsettled him at Anfield where he was forced to give a penalty away. If you look at all the big clubs we have played since he arrived they have all scored against us and when you pay 75m you spend that to stop that happening. I think Lovren is our Steve Bruce, JT, or dare I say it Dave Watson type defender and Harry Maguire falls into that category...just the way I see it anyway, you make good points tho... Just check what Salah did to Maguire

Sterling fouled VVD, the latter stopped, this is what he did and what has Maguire done for you to consider him best in the world, only you know. You better get on your chopper to Goodison

if it was a foul why did the ref not blow and disallow the goal, size of Sterling next to VVD should never of even been a contest when it came to strenghth, you be telling me Modric should out muscle Zouma next. I have never said Maguire was the best in the world, I said last season him and Vertongen were comfortably the best defenders in the league, which in my opinion they were. So small players cannot foul bigger players right?
