Who would you play at CB if we signed VvD?
Obviously Matip and Van Dijk, I'm very vocal about how poor I think Lovren is but Klopp sees him as part of the future otherwise there was no need for the new contract. The new contract was abit odd, there were no other clubs being linked with him and he had around 2.5 years left on his contract, he signed it in April, which was just before the news of the VvD interest/chats broke, so I think he may have wanted Lovren signed up before he went for VvD as he suspected Lovren would not be happy, so having him on a 5 year deal gave us more control. What you say makes sense, all I'd add is that if we decide we want rid of the player the new contract makes it difficult. He's on big wages for his ability which a new club wouldn't match so we'd be in the situation where we'd probably have to pay him off.

Yeah, but I think Klopp planned to keep Lovren anyway, so having him on a longer deal was not a big deal, he's 28 so as a CB probably has a good 4-5 years in him at the top level, which is his contract length. It turned out well for him in the end then with VvD not joining and getting a nice pay rise!!!

The new contract could of been to keep value in lovren when Klopp expected to land vvd but it didn't happen ? Don't think so, you don't offer a player a raise if you don't believe in him

He can't rate him too highly, he would have been dropped if we'd bought VvD. And he doesn't really have a choice, other than Matip, he's the best we've got.

Can't believe Klopp rates lovren given his calamities surly ? As he could find only one player (who was not even available by the way) in the whole world that could replace Lovren, I am convince he rates Lovren very highly. He even asked journalists to name 5 defenders who are better than what he had.

I rather think he likes what he was and improving means VVD. He should know better as the players are playing in his system

He should know better as the players are playing in his system quite clearly they meet and both parties where impressed with each other and both committed for the transfer to go ahead. vvd keep his side by making it obvious he wanted us and no one else thats y Southampton got upset with us and threatened to report us and klopp kept his word by not going for another cb. i think we will be back in for ddv in january and will go in big time. the threat of reporting us would have gone away by then

Yeah I can see us going back in for VvD in January Suso, at least I hope we do. It's a bit of a catch 22 for VvD as if he plays well, Southampton won't deal, and if he plays badly, he risks FSG refusing to meet his valuation, Klopp's word notwithstanding. Wonder how he feels about the whole ridiculous cockup, that's left him in a most un envious situation?

He should first of all learn to read his contract, if he wanted to leave so badly, why did he sign a new one? He hardly played since he signed as he was injured but did get wages. Players need to be taught a lesson and I am actually happy that a few clubs like Southampton and us with Coutinho are taking that kind of stand.
