This embarrassing u-turn shows something is also not right within the club. Somewhere along the line, someone leaked that he favoured Liverpool while we can only speculate if VDV indeed met Kloop in Blackpool. whether we are talking too much to journalist or organising unauthorised clandestine meetings with other players, we have to be smarter. this is really school boys stuff.

Yes I fully agree dasil. The issue here is not how much the player is worth or not worth, as some are trying to turn kthis debacle into. The issue is the competence of those who run the club to do so in a competent and professional manner, sufficient in this case to sign a player who wants to come to us, and for a fee which originally The selling club was reportedly asking and we were reportedly prepared to pay. However the incompetent antics of our management antagonised the selling club into first reporting us to the FA and then hiking the price to an unacceptable level. This is not the first time we've done that either under these owners.

We're the football equivalent of the Trump administration

What makes you say they were ready to sell at 50m?

That was the figure most of the reports were quoting. What I said, and you're conveniently ignoring, is that this debacle is not about the asking price or the value of the player, it's about the competence of the club management. And clearly after over six years they're not learning. They're as embarrassingly incompetent today as they were then.

Pretty sure that's the price Southampton said a couple months ago when interest was growing, too.

You / we don't even know if we did anything wrong. For me, Southampton wanted a bidding war with us, Chelsea and City and with VVD saying he wanted to move to us, that scuppered that. They spat their dummy and report us for doing something (nothing concrete for what we've supposedly done) and hike the price up to what they were probably hoping it would rise to.

The apology is a weird one from us and does make us look guilty of something but the statement as a whole is us saying we'll not be held to ransom and we won't be paying way, way over the odds.

And lets be honest here, we're hardly the only team that has leaks to the press or that players say they want to sign for. In this day and age, someone can fart and it's reported.

Southampton probably did want a bidding war, but that didn't happen because klopp contacted the player and turned his head with the player supposedly choosing us. Man City and Chelsea then drop their interest. All clubs tap up players but we've been caught, otherwise we wouldn't apologise for it. It's fvcking amateurish.

Too think we were linked to him when he was still at Celtic, and in the usual LFC way, we never went after him.
It doesn't matter what world class manager we get, they will get duped by management when it comes to signings. If you look back in the Rafa days, all the players he wanted to sign, who are now world class players, just because of our low ball and underhand tactics.

well we hardly made a craven public apology if we hadn't fuc*ked it up in some way or other! clearly FSG are trying to head off an investigation. If they weren't utterly incompetent on football management we wouldn't have to be running scared of an investigation and losing out on Klopp's number one target this season. There's no getting away from it these mugs clearly have learned nothing in over 6 years here. They have embarrassed and humiliated the club plain and simple.
