No Liverpool FC deal for Benteke as Reds continue to pursue Villa striker
Christian Benteke remains Liverpool’s No 1 target – but there is no deal in place to sign the Aston Villa striker.
Reports this morning suggested that the Belgium international was on the brink of completing a move to Anfield.
However, the ECHO understands that the situation remains unchanged. Liverpool want to sign Benteke but are unwilling to pay the £32.5million asking price and that stand-off remains.
Liverpool don’t want to pay more than £25million for the big frontman, who has two years remaining on his current contract.
Villa have no interest in selling Benteke and are highly unlikely to accept lower than the release clause.
Part of the reason is that Villa will have to pass on 15% of any fee over £7m to his former club Genk, who negotiated a sell-on clause when he left his homeland in 2012.
If the release clause is met, that would be £3.8m heading to the Belgian outfit.
“There’s a buy-out clause in his contract so it will be impossible for us to stop him if he wants to go,” Villa boss Tim Sherwood said back in May.
“Someone’s got to meet that buy-out clause and if they don’t it won’t be considered because we don’t want to lose him.”
Since arriving from Genk in 2012, Benteke has scored 49 goals in 101 appearances for Villa.

If we can get him for 25m, then I'd say we'd be sorted up front for the coming season.

They should just spend that money earmarked for Benteke on a decent midfielder such as Kovacic or an actual DM. Throw Lucas and Allen in that deal plus cash for Kovacic.
Use Balotelli no one wants to sign him anyway, sell Borini and Lambert. Give Ings, Origi a fair crack and let's stop signing players for the sake of it. BR doesn't have a clue what a decent striker is anyway. Or save that money until Jan when ol' pirly whites will be out the door. Midfield is the priority and Milner is not the answer. Allen and Lucas combined are worth more than Kovacic. Besides, why would we get rid of Allen? Striker is a priority. Kovacic isn't a DM yet you want 'an actual DM'.

Why? There is a world out there full of strikers and the overpriced Heskey clone is all that we can find.
I'm just not buying that at all. He's that good there all just queuing up to sign him at £32 million.
Good grief. Top strikers are a rare breed. They are a specimen. There is very very few in European football. Yeh, and he ain't one of them. Do you bother to ask why no one else has been remotely interested over the years? Anyone who thinks he is going to just start banging in goals for a team who never plays a cross from the wing is deluded or clueless. Take your pick. Unless we see a drastic change in playing style it's a round peg square hole.

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

But out of the strikers we have been realistically linked with (Rondon, Bacca, a few others can't remember) I would prefer Benteke. We need a striker and he appears to be the best we can afford/attract. Top clubs haven't been queuing up for him because he is a not a proven top performing striker, but from our point of view I don't see any alternatives. To be fair to him his aerial ability which your eluding to is only one facet of his game. He might able to play in other systems just as well.

It's true that our choices are limited as Rodgers cannot attract top names and FSG won't pay the premium to attract players to a non CL team.
