Obviously the tactics are more important than the shape. If we have defenders holding on to the ball and playing tiki taka at the back, we're more likely to concede than defenders playing hoof ball.

4-2-3-1
Mignolet Flannagan(RB) Skrtel (CB) Sakho (CB) Moreno (LB) Allen (CDM) Henderson/Can (CDM)
Lallana/Milner (RM) Countinho (CAM) Sterling (LM)
Sturridge (ST)
Improve right back (more experience), need another top striker (in case Sturridge gets injured) and back up keeper, could do with a holding midfielder as well (more bite in midfield) The 4-2-3-1 is my preferred setup. The 2 holding can both fall back into defense and support forward midfield when required. For this formation to be effective, the 2 holding must be very versatile high quality footballers. Although I think Henderson can possibly manage the position, I do not think Allen beside him could work. Push Emre beside Henderson to see how it works out.

Truth is, the most suitable system is one which doesn't remain the same in defence or attack.
The system is more like:
Position - Defensive - Standard - Offensive
GK - GK - GK - Sweeper Keeper
RB - RB - DEF WB - ATT WB LB - LB - DEF WB - ATT WB CB - L (Libero) - S (Sweeper) - LD (Limited Defender) CB - CB - CB - BPD (Ball Playing Defender) DM - CB - DM - BWM (Ball Winning Midfielder) CM - DM - (Deep-Lying Playmaker) - B2B (Box to Box) CM - CM - APM (Attacking Playmaker) - AM/E (Attacking Midfielder/Enganche) W - R/LM - WPM (Wide Play-Maker) - Trequartista IF - IF (Inside Forward) - R (Raumdeuter) - DF (Defensive Forward) ST - AF (Advanced Forward) - CF (Complete Forward) - P (Poacher)
It allows any team to switch between a 5-4-1 / 4-3-3 / 4-1-3 (2-1/1-2)-2
It is a versatile set-up, but complicated, but ultimately allows all of our better players to be used in positions they prefer to play in...
Mignolet is capable in goal Manquillo may be suitable, not sure, need an option for now Moreno is suited to the LB Role Skrtel (May Leave) can play the 1st CB Role (Lovren is capable) Sakho is ideally suited to the 2nd CB Role Can is suited to the DM Role Henderson is ideally suited to the 1st CM Role Milner and Coutinho are suited to the 2nd CM Role Sterling (May Leave) & Lallana are suited to the W Role Markovic (I believe) is suited best here but needs someone better for right now Sturridge is ideally suited to the ST role
If Sterling leaves, I think Coutinho will be pushed back into the front three.
While I've missed out a lot of our squad players I think the best way forward is making sure we rekindle the spark we had playing 4-1-2-1-2 and 4-3-3 last season, and use the 5-4-1 as the fall-back option, but all can work if the right personnel are used to keep the team balanced. We need a new inside forward and wing back, and another striker for sure though.

Agreed you mention some very versatile systems and versatility is usually key to a season long campaign especially in the EPL, where a manager can get found out very quickly.

I'd argue it gets even more fluid and versatile than that in the way I would like to see us play and I'm sure many of us could write out a novel on how we may want our team to play but I'm simplifying it.

Right then who should be on the pitch and why? What role should they have?
In what positions would you like to see us improve this window?
